Show Notes

In this episode Madz and Hollywood Mike discuss Season 1, Episode 22 'Romance Under the Moon: Usagi's First Kiss'. This is based Volume1, Chapter 4 of the original manga. It all revolves around a reception at The Kingdom of Diamonds Embassy. Usagi learns that the Princess of Diamonds has arrived in town to unveil a Legendary Treasure. Luna, Tuxedo Mask and Queen Beryl all wonder if the treasure could possibly be the Silver Crystal and thus hatch plans to get into the reception to find out. Usagi, disguised as a beautiful princess, sneaks into the Embassy and attends a masquerade ball where Tuxedo Mask recognizes her as the princess from his recurring dreams. He asks her to dance and they both feel they've danced together before in some forgotten past. Nephrite uses Naru to posses Princess Diamond with a shadow demon and tries to get away with the treasure. Usagi tries to stop the possessed princess and gets pushed over a balcony. When Tuxedo Mask goes to grab her, he too falls. They embrace each other and use a parasol to float slowly down to safety. The Sailor Guardians prevail over Nephrite and the Dark Kingdom's plot. The episode ends with Tuxedo Mask giving Usagi her first kiss. A sensation that seems familiar to them both. The hosts digress into many pop culture refernces such as Hello Kitty, The Box Trolls and Superman. There are some heated debates over possible holes in the script. The topics of underage drinking and the importance of consent are touched upon.

[00:00:01] Speaker A: We are the super nerdy Sailor Guardians who fight for love and justice. And this is across the Mooniverse. Hello, and welcome to across the Mooniverse. My name's Maddie. [00:00:37] Speaker B: And I'm Mike. [00:00:38] Speaker A: And hoo, boy, do we have stuff to talk about today. Happy Moon Day, everyone. [00:00:43] Speaker B: This is a big episode. Happy Moon Day, by the way. All right, today's episode is Season 1, Episode 22, Romance under the Moon. Usagi's first kiss. Oh, boy. [00:00:56] Speaker A: This is. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. [00:00:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:00] Speaker A: Yeah. So you want to just dive into it? Gosh. Okay. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Yeah. Like, as I mentioned in the previous episode of across the Universe, this is one of the chapters in the original manga. This episode. [00:01:13] Speaker A: Yes. [00:01:13] Speaker B: Based on that. [00:01:14] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:01:15] Speaker B: On chapter four of volume one, it. [00:01:18] Speaker A: Has one of the most iconic scenes in all of Sailor Moon in it. And I can't wait till we get there, because I'm going to just have a moment where I just swoon a little bit. But it's. It's okay. Okay, let's get started, because we start at every favorite thing. Traffic. [00:01:40] Speaker B: A traffic cam. [00:01:41] Speaker A: Yep. Favorite thing. [00:01:43] Speaker B: The overhead shot of a traffic jam. Usagi running. I'm going to be late. And in the manga, it says. It shows a clock and it says 8 25. In the anime, it shows a clock and it says 9:15. So I'm not quite sure when school begins. [00:01:59] Speaker A: Who knows? They changed it. They changed it between the two because studies show that waking up later is better for you when you're that young. [00:02:09] Speaker B: There you go. And so Usagi stops, and she says, that looks like a checkpoint. I wonder if there's some sort of special event happening. And what she's talking about is that the police have everybody pulled over and they're checking all the cars. So it's a police checkpoint. At that point, Naru walks up, and Usagi says, good morning, Naru. And Naru says, morning, Usagi. [00:02:30] Speaker A: She's real depressed. [00:02:31] Speaker B: Usagi says, hey, are you all right? You sound sort of depressed. And Naru's size. And then the background turns red. Her face becomes a dark brown. And flashback to Nephrite saying, she's the prettiest girl in school. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Masato Sanjoy. [00:02:48] Speaker B: Or in the. In. In the subtitled version. In the subtitled version, saying that you're. Oh, no. What is it? [00:02:56] Speaker A: The sweet. [00:02:56] Speaker B: Hey, Naru, has anyone told you the sweetest. You're the sweetest girl in. Sweetest girl in school. Yeah. And. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Yeah. Which is slightly less creepy. [00:03:04] Speaker B: You're the cutest creepy than Judas Girl in school, right? Exactly. [00:03:08] Speaker A: Slightly less just. [00:03:10] Speaker B: And then. And then the flashback morphs into, cut the acting and reveal yourself. I know who you are. You're Sailor Moon. And then we flash back to the present, and Naru says to herself, what does Mr. Santoin really think of me? [00:03:25] Speaker A: So she is conflicted. [00:03:28] Speaker B: Yeah. So Naru's back. [00:03:30] Speaker A: Mm. [00:03:31] Speaker B: But she's. She's wondering, you know, she's. She's still. She's still mulling over what happened in the episode at the mall. [00:03:38] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah. It's good to see that she recovered from losing a lot of energy, because that was. [00:03:46] Speaker B: Yeah, she is. She is depressed, though. And she wonders. Oh, yes, she wonders. You know, she has these. You know, she has these different images in her mind of her interactions with Mr. Sanjuin. She's obviously, you know, obviously holding a torch for him. [00:04:01] Speaker A: Oh, for sure. I mean, he's been so nice to her, but also, at the same time, a little weird. So we'll see, I guess. [00:04:09] Speaker B: Yeah. And I don't know what she. What she thinks of being accused of being Sailor Moon. I wonder what she thinks about that. [00:04:16] Speaker A: I mean, I feel like she's a little. Little more than confused, considering that she's been saved by Sailor Moon a lot. So she's like, what? I can't be Sailor Moon. I get sick. Oh, no, I'm going to be attacked, aren't I? Is probably what she was thinking in that moment. She's like, damn it, not again. [00:04:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:32] Speaker A: But Usagi. Usagi snaps her out of it and says, yo, we're running late. [00:04:38] Speaker B: They run to class. And they make it there. They make it there after the first vow. And then Umino pops up. [00:04:44] Speaker A: Yes. [00:04:44] Speaker B: And tells Usagi that the princess from the Kingdom of Diamonds is in town. Princess Diamond. She's hosting a big reception at the embassy. The Kingdom of Diamonds is where most of the world's gemstones come from, it turns out. And so Usagi says, well, that explains the checkpoints I saw. Yeah. [00:05:01] Speaker A: Can I just say, I'm so excited to see Umino, because it's been a little bit since we've. Since he's popped up. And so, I mean, even in the mall episode with the love letters, you didn't really see him. And. Yeah, so he's back. He's got the T, like always. He's just like, what up? I heard you needed a palate cleanser. How about my silly face? Yeah, and I love it. [00:05:25] Speaker B: So it says here. Then he says, the princess will inherit the family's heirloom the legendary secret treasure. It's to be unveiled at the reception. [00:05:35] Speaker A: For the first time. [00:05:36] Speaker B: Saga tries to imagine the secret treasure. Puts her head down with question marks swirling around her head, and she's like, I'm trying to imagine the secret treasure, and I just can't do it. And then Naru, still depressed, says, I'll go and take a look for you and tell you all about it. My family owns a jewelry store. We had a special invitation to the reception. [00:05:57] Speaker A: Yeah. Which, you know, you remember, that's where they were jelly beans way so long ago. What, 20 episodes ago, they were jelly beans in that very jewelry store. [00:06:08] Speaker B: Yeah. 21 episodes ago. [00:06:12] Speaker A: Would it be 20 episodes? Because it was episode one. [00:06:15] Speaker B: Right. This is episode 22. [00:06:17] Speaker A: 21. See, listen, this is hard. You know, this. [00:06:20] Speaker B: It is very hard. All right, so what's next, Maddie? [00:06:24] Speaker A: Next, we. We cut to Luna, who is just, you know, enjoying the morning paper as you do when you're a cat. And she sees an article about Princess diamond, who is the. You know, the princess who's going to be there showing off the crystal. And Luna is intrigued because, you know, she's been looking for this Princess of the Moon, and she's also been looking for some sort of weird. Some sort of crystal. So she's like, hmm, could this be. Is it. Is it going to be this easy? We need to get in on this, because this might be our jackpot. This might be our princess. [00:07:01] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:07:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:03] Speaker B: Then we. We cut to the Dark Kingdom, and it's just eventually, it's. This is just a series of reveals on everybody learning about Princess diamond coming into town. Now we're at the Dark Kingdom, and Queen Beryl is like, the king of Diamond's legendary secret treasure. I wonder if it could be the legendary Silver Crystal. And Zoisite says, I'll check it out for you immediately. And then Nephrite. Nephrite materializes and says, don't bother. I have this. I'll handle this matter. And Zoi says, no, me. [00:07:31] Speaker A: I'll do it. No, me, me, me. [00:07:32] Speaker B: Nephrite, stop butting in. Finding, which is all Zoi does is my job. I know. Exactly. [00:07:39] Speaker A: It's like, stop butting in. That's all you do. How dare you, Zoisite. [00:07:46] Speaker B: And then Nephrite says, I'm responsible for all the activities on Earth. And Zoisite says, that's a lot for you to cover. Nephrite says, I'm able to handle it. Leave it to me. And Beryl says, very well, then. If this legendary secret crystal is indeed The Silver Crystal. Then we must acquire it immediately. With its immense power, we could finally be able to restore the great, great ruler, and the Dark Kingdom would become the rightful leader of this world. Dun dun dun dun dun dun. And then Joyce says, but, my queen. And Beryl says, tell me, Nephrite, what's your plan? And Nephrite says, I have my own way of doing things. I prefer not to just. I prefer that you just watch rather than explain my entire agenda. [00:08:29] Speaker A: Yeah. He's like, you'll see. Yeah, you'll. I'll do it. You'll see. So I don't need to tell you what I do. [00:08:36] Speaker B: Zoistite says, nephrite has failed every single. Every single assignment. Why are you giving him another chance? And Braille says, because now he's forced to succeed. He's desperate. [00:08:45] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:46] Speaker B: All right, now we. We cut to a new cavern in the Dark Kingdom. It's obviously the Dark Kingdom. It's this new cavern. It's like it's got this big stalagmite coming down from the ceiling that turns. [00:08:56] Speaker A: Into a throne of some sort. [00:08:58] Speaker B: Turns into a throne. It's a throne. And seated at that throne is a figure with. He's got a general's outfit. It looks very much like a Nephite's outfit. It's got some kind of insignia on the shoulders. It's not exactly fried eggs, because they kind of swoop back. Further back on the shoulders. It's some sort of. [00:09:18] Speaker A: It's overeating. [00:09:21] Speaker B: They've had the yolks removed. It's egg whites. [00:09:23] Speaker A: Yes. Healthier, if you will. [00:09:25] Speaker B: So and so then Zoisite is kneeling against a new seated figure with his head in that figure's lap. The new figure is gently caressing Zoysite's head hoon site with green hair. He's got long green hair. It's kind of a light. It's like a minty green. [00:09:42] Speaker A: It's white. [00:09:43] Speaker B: It looks green. [00:09:43] Speaker A: It's white. [00:09:44] Speaker B: It looks green in the Dark Kingdom. [00:09:45] Speaker A: That's. I mean. Yeah. Well, it's got. The Dark Kingdom kind of has just like an overall, like, weird silvery glow or. Weird glow. [00:09:52] Speaker B: Okay, so his hair will be. His hair is white. All right. [00:09:56] Speaker A: His hair is white. Much like epaulette. [00:09:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:58] Speaker A: Or in the original Dicta malachite. Why did they say. Kunzeit says, I don't know. Because they're both still stones. [00:10:05] Speaker B: Kunzeit says, true. Kunzeit says, patience, my dear boy. My dear Zoisite. The impatient. The impatient always loses. And Zoe says, but I can't Kunzeit. And Kunze says, for now, let's watch him carefully and see exactly what he's got planned. We can get rid of Nephrite when it suits us to do so. [00:10:26] Speaker A: Yep. What. How do you. How. What do you think? How do you think he's related to the others? [00:10:32] Speaker B: I think he's. I think he's the fourth. I think he's the fourth King of the Kingdom of Heaven. [00:10:36] Speaker A: Ooh, that might be it. In fact, that is. That would. That would be it. That's not. Yeah, the big reveal. [00:10:43] Speaker B: I mean, because they've all had. I mean, they both had military uniforms. Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoysite, and now. Now Kunzite. That makes four. So I'm guessing he's the fourth one, so. [00:10:54] Speaker A: Yeah, but we don't know how he's. [00:10:56] Speaker B: Going to come into play. We haven't seen him interact with Beryl. We don't know if. We don't know if he's on the DL. What's his. You know. We don't know what his deal is. [00:11:03] Speaker A: Yeah, Kunzeit is my favorite of the four, but Jadeite is actually a strong second. Because I love Jadeite. Because he's ridiculous. [00:11:13] Speaker B: I don't know. Nephrite's. Nephrite's got. Nephrite's got a lot of class. He's got a lot of style. [00:11:17] Speaker A: Yeah, but he'd be hitting on middle schoolers. [00:11:19] Speaker B: And Nephrite loses pretty miserably. Exactly. All right, so where are we next? Shine. Hino. Next. [00:11:26] Speaker A: Yes. [00:11:27] Speaker B: Right? [00:11:28] Speaker A: Where they're all talking. Yes. Yeah. And Linda is bringing up her thoughts that Princess diamond might be the Moon Princess. [00:11:37] Speaker B: And Usagi. [00:11:38] Speaker A: Usagi says, it's exciting. [00:11:40] Speaker B: And Ami says, well, we can't dismiss. We can't dismiss Luna's hunch. We should go check it out. Usagi says, but how? I'm sure Princess diamond has her bodyguards all around her. And we can't get into the reception without a special invitation. Then what happens? Then Rei gets really mad is what happens. [00:11:58] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:59] Speaker B: Rei goes off on Usagi. [00:12:02] Speaker A: Can I just say my notes for this? She asked me that. I was like, shit. But my notes for this say Luna thinks Princess D might be Moon Princess. How do we get in? Giant sweat drop from Rey. So that's not very helpful. [00:12:19] Speaker B: Yeah, no. Rey gets really mad at Usagi, and she's like, don't you think we know that? Because Usagi is saying that we can't. That she's gonna have bodyguards all around her. We can't get her in without a special invitation. And then Rei's like, don't you think we already know that this is our mission? Quit complaining about it. And then that's it for Usagi. She's like, why are you yelling in my face like that? And in the dub, she says, why are you always such a meanie, Rey? And she starts falling like a little baby. [00:12:48] Speaker A: Listen, I'm on Usagi's side because Rei came out of nowhere with that. It was just like, Rei came way out of nowhere. Usagi, maybe. Like, she may be stating the obvious, but damn, like, she. At least she's trying. Shit. [00:13:02] Speaker B: She's participating in a discussion about how to. How to. How to get a hold of Silver Crystal and explaining what they have to overcome. Yeah, it was way out of. Way out of line for Rey. That does not happen in the manga, by the way. [00:13:15] Speaker A: No, because Rei is the weird. Like, Rei and Usagi hate each other. Sort of always bickering arc is only in the anime. [00:13:26] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [00:13:27] Speaker A: Why? [00:13:27] Speaker B: I don't know. So then. So then. So then Usagi's just crying her eyes out, and Rey says, well, you just grow up. And then Ami, always the peacemaker when. When this stuff happens. And she says, well, why don't we meet up at the embassy tonight? Put our heads together when we get there? Maybe at the very least, we'll be able to tell if Princess diamond is the princess we're looking for just by looking at her. [00:13:48] Speaker A: Ami. [00:13:49] Speaker B: And we love you. That's that. Then we cut to. We cut to Usagi and Luna walking down the street, and Luna. Luna says, you need to take your responsibilities more seriously. And it's weird because in the dub, Luna says, I feel like I'm being left out of the details of the mission. You need to fill me in. So it's just. It's just a, like, little throwaway moment where they're walking away from the time. [00:14:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:11] Speaker B: And. And so then they. They get to Usagi's house, and they come in, and Usagi notices her dad is all dressed up and asks why. [00:14:20] Speaker A: Yep. And he's like. [00:14:22] Speaker B: It turns out he's going to the. [00:14:23] Speaker A: Embassy because he works for a magazine, and he's going to do. Yeah. And he is looking like Kenji Papa. Looking great. [00:14:33] Speaker B: Yeah. And he's like, don't worry. I'll take notes for the both of us. And he takes off. [00:14:37] Speaker A: Bye. [00:14:38] Speaker B: And. And Usagi says, I gotta get in there. But how? And then she goes, I got it. And then she gets a little thought bubble with a bunny in It. That's the thought. It's just a bunny. I love that. And then Luna says, what are you going to do? Come on, tell me. She pulls out her transformation pen, and Luna says, no, don't. And then calls out, moon power. Transform me into a beautiful princess. And can I transform into a white and lavender gown with red flowers on the shoulder straps and waist? [00:15:11] Speaker A: And Luna is sitting here saying, you can't just use the pen for fun. Like, that's not what it's for. It's for serious scout business. And meanwhile, like, last time she used the pen, Luna was like, you should use the pen so that we can get in here undercover. And now Usagi's trying to get in undercover, and Luna's like, is it for a mission? I'm not so sure. Hmm. [00:15:38] Speaker B: Yeah, very inconsistent messaging from Luna about when to use the pen. Yeah, very, very inconsistent messaging about when to use the pen. Because Usagi says, luna, check out this dress. Isn't it lovely? And so she's standing there in this. It's almost a. It's a really light lavender, the dress. And it's got little. It's got little red flowers along the shoulders, along the neckline, and by the waist. And she. Then it comes with a. It comes with a little parasol. You got a little parasol that she's got above her head. [00:16:09] Speaker A: Yep. [00:16:10] Speaker B: Which I don't know why you would bring that to the embassy at night, because the parasol is to keep the sun away from you. [00:16:16] Speaker A: But anyway, it's an accessory. You gotta accessorize. Okay, Okay. I mean, come on. [00:16:22] Speaker B: I don't know anything. All right? [00:16:24] Speaker A: She brings the parasol because she knows that parasols are useful, as we will see. [00:16:28] Speaker B: Right? And this is when Luna says, yeah, but you shouldn't be using the transformation pen for your own personal use. And Usagi says, yeah, well, actually, I'm not. I'm only doing this for the mission to discover a princess diamond or the King of Diamonds. It's truly the princess we've been trying to find when we've seen them looking for this. This is my question, right? She's like, so we're going to see if Princess diamond from the Kingdom of Diamonds is the princess we've been trying to find. When have we ever seen them looking for a princess? We've never seen them looking for a princess. We've only. It's only been mentioned, like, once or twice. And that's it. [00:17:02] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, it's been mentioned, and it's kind of like a. It's Kind of like a. Like a sea plot kind of. It's like. It's like, stop the Dark Kingdom with their weekly shenanigans. Trained to be better sailor scouts. Find the princess. [00:17:18] Speaker B: Right. Basically. I mean, basically, they go around fighting Yoma and. [00:17:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:24] Speaker B: And hope it's finding the princess. And finding. [00:17:27] Speaker A: Yeah, it might just be, you know, like, when you're looking for somebody, they were just waiting for clues, and they don't have anything. And, you know, they're hoping that because there's bad guys, that it's going to hopefully, like, rile something up and they're going to run into the princess or, like, the bad guys are looking for her too, or something. But. Yeah. [00:17:47] Speaker B: So Usagi. Usagi's all making a point that her beautiful princess costume is all for the mission. And Luna's like, really? [00:17:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:56] Speaker B: And then Usagi dances around. [00:18:00] Speaker A: Which is so cute. [00:18:02] Speaker B: Yeah. And then Luna says, you're hopeless. [00:18:04] Speaker A: Yep. [00:18:05] Speaker B: All right, tell us what happens next, Maddie. [00:18:07] Speaker A: Meanwhile, over yonder way, we see a dream sequence, and it's Bae's dream sequence. He's having a dream of a, like, very misty landscape. Nothing's really clear. And then you pan up, and there's this oddly familiar silhouette that kind of looks like someone with, I don't know, like, odongo, like, pigtails and in a dress, you know, similar to maybe, like, Usagi in a dress or something. I don't know. I'm not saying that that's who it is. I'm just saying it looks similar. And she is asking for him to find the Ginzui show, which is Silver Crystal. And he has no idea what that means, but she's just saying, please find it for me. Please. And he wakes up from this dream, and we find out that he says, I don't understand. [00:19:07] Speaker B: What is this? Silver Crystal? [00:19:09] Speaker A: Yeah. And he's been having this recurring dream basically every night. [00:19:15] Speaker B: Wakes up. [00:19:17] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:19:19] Speaker B: Mamaru wakes up. His bedroom curtains are blowing in the wind, and his face is drenched in cold sweat. And he says that same dream again. So obviously this is something. This is a recurring nightmare that he had. Recurring dream that he has about this princess in silhouette form, asking him to please find the silver Crystal. [00:19:40] Speaker A: Yeah, that's good to know. It appears that maybe Mamoru does know he's Tuxedo Masked. [00:19:48] Speaker B: Yeah, we'll talk more about that later, because I have. I feel like he has to know these tuxedo masks in an upcoming scene. Anyway, so then we cut to the Kingdom of Diamonds, and Usagi, she's Now, carrying the umbrella at the entrance, walks past Ami and Rey. Rami and Rey. They're dressed up in nice dresses. They look very nice. [00:20:10] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, yeah. [00:20:11] Speaker B: And the security guard says, miss, may I see your invitation? And Usagi says, I'm the Princess of Ivanovich. My presence was personally requested. And she just walked away. [00:20:22] Speaker A: Yep. And Ami and Rey are shook in. [00:20:25] Speaker B: The background, and he's like, what? I've never heard of such a place. Yep. Yeah. So Usagi walks in. Usagi walks into the embassy, and she's like, this is so cool. It's a masquerade ball. It's like looking at a foreign movie. [00:20:42] Speaker A: Yeah. And everyone has tuxedo mask. Masks. [00:20:45] Speaker B: Yep. Everyone has masks. Now, one thing I found really annoying was the shortcuts the animators took in this sequence, because they keep using the same loops of animation to show people dancing. It's really bad. So it's in the lower right hand corner. It's on the outer ring of dancers. They're just twirling around. And everyone has blue dresses. And then in the next ring in, everyone has red dresses. And they twirl around, and they use that same animation loop like four or five times, and then they cut to a medium shot, and it's the. It's the same animation, and it's just like. You know, it just. It just made me so grateful for the Box Trolls. Have you ever seen the Box Trolls? [00:21:27] Speaker A: Yes. Yes, I have. I love. [00:21:29] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm sure that you have. Exactly. They have the ballroom sequence in the Box Trolls. And when I saw that, I was just like, oh, my God. Because I've done clay animation before. [00:21:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:41] Speaker B: And to animate all those people dancing with their arms going out and up, and to remember where everybody's movements are from one, from one frame to the next is incredibly complex. [00:21:53] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:53] Speaker B: And so, like, I just found it really cheap and cheesy that Sailor Moon just used animation loops to show the people dancing. They could have done a better. They could have put a little more effort in to show the people. [00:22:06] Speaker A: They might. They might not have had the budget. [00:22:09] Speaker B: I'm not cutting any slack on this one, all right? I'm not cutting away. [00:22:14] Speaker A: Box Trolls had a bigger budget. That's all I'm saying. [00:22:19] Speaker B: True. [00:22:20] Speaker A: Excellent movie. [00:22:21] Speaker B: So then. So then it is such a good movie. Everything those guys do is great. [00:22:27] Speaker A: True, True that. [00:22:28] Speaker B: Right. Sees Naru, and he sees her from across the room, and he walks up to her and he asks her to dance, and he takes off his mask, and it's like. It's me, Naru. [00:22:38] Speaker A: He's like, hello. Remember me? [00:22:41] Speaker B: He says, did you come here? [00:22:43] Speaker A: He's always creeping you. [00:22:45] Speaker B: He's always creeping on her. Did you come here alone? Why is that important? Why is that important? Nephrite, Come on. [00:22:51] Speaker A: Yeah. And she's like, yeah. On behalf of. [00:22:55] Speaker B: In my mother's place. Yeah. And. And he says, I never in my wildest dreams expected to see you. This is turning out to be the best night ever. And Naru says, that's so romantic. And. And it is. He's so. He's putting the moves on Naru again, which. Which you already described as creepy. And here he is doing it again. [00:23:16] Speaker A: Damn it. [00:23:17] Speaker B: And you know, it just. I feel. I feel so bad for Naru because he's. She's madly in love with a bad guy and she doesn't know it. She doesn't know he's a bad guy. [00:23:24] Speaker A: I mean, it's. It's very. David Bowie Labyrinth vibes. [00:23:28] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. Yes. And it's just. It's just. It's. It's so unfortunate because Naru is so pure of heart and she's just. She's just following her heart, which normally I. I would be a proponent of, but in this case, it's. It's. It's bad juju. [00:23:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:43] Speaker B: And so Naru Nephrite dance. When they dance together, I noticed for the first time, Nephrite has really dark skin. Naru has a fair complexion because he's a redhead. But when you see them dancing together, his. He almost looks African American. His skin is so dark. [00:23:59] Speaker A: I don't think I noticed that. I'll have to. I'll have to go back and look. [00:24:04] Speaker B: But check it out. When they dance together, there's a huge difference in their skin tone. Yep. Yeah. Usagi is jealous that she already has a dance partner. [00:24:13] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:13] Speaker B: She doesn't notice it's Nep, right? [00:24:15] Speaker A: Usagi, you should know this by now. Come on, girl. You were there at the mall. You saw the thing. [00:24:22] Speaker B: Girl, I know that. How does she not notice it's nephew? Because she was wearing. He was wearing. She's seen him dressed up with that mask before. She's seen him with and without the mask. So there's no. There's no excuse for her not to notice that it's Nephrite. [00:24:37] Speaker A: Maybe she's just swept up. She doesn't see who it is. Even though she should definitely recognize the hair, but she doesn't see who it is. So she just sees Naru dancing and she's like, oh, Bestie slay. [00:24:51] Speaker B: All right, then what happened? [00:24:53] Speaker A: What happens is Usagi is just taken in the party, and then in the background. Who could it be? It's Kenji Papa, Usagi's dad, who sees her and doesn't even recognize her, but he talks about how lovely she is, and he says, I wonder if my girl will grow up to be as pretty as she. And I'm like, oh. And then he takes. And then he snaps a picture of her. And she's just so flattered by it. She's like, dad doesn't even realize it's me. And it's like such a cute little moment that you don't get a lot of with her. [00:25:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:25:27] Speaker A: It is like immediate family. So it's just like. It makes me so happy, that little moment. [00:25:32] Speaker B: Yeah. And unfortunately, then someone spills a drink on Usagi's dress. [00:25:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:25:39] Speaker B: Outside of the ballroom is Tuxedo Mask. [00:25:42] Speaker A: Can I ask you a question about this scene right here? [00:25:44] Speaker B: By the way, we don't know where her umbrella has gone. [00:25:47] Speaker A: Okay, so in that scene where we see Tuxedo Mask for the first time standing out in the hallway, where is the breeze coming from that is blowing his cape? Because his cape is in motion. I'm not sure, but it's inside. So I'm like, do they have AC on? Why is no one else's cave going? [00:26:08] Speaker B: Well, if you look at. If you look from the exterior of the building, the ground floor has windows, but there's no balconies on the ground floor. And there's no. There's no sliding doors to the ground floor. There's just. There's just main entrances, and then the three. There's three floors above that, and those floors have balconies. So if they were on an upper floor, I would say that the breeze could be coming from one of the balconies being open, but they're not. They're not up that high. They're on the ground floor. [00:26:36] Speaker A: No, they're on, like, the first floor. [00:26:37] Speaker B: Okay. Also, where's his hat? Did he. Did he check his hat at the. At the coat check, which is obviously checked your umbrella. [00:26:46] Speaker A: No hats inside, sir, please. Yeah. It's just disrespectful in the kingdom of diamonds to wear a hat. Yeah. [00:26:56] Speaker B: Zaggy obviously checked her umbrella there, too. Her parasol? Yeah, she checked that at the coach tag as well. [00:27:01] Speaker A: Of course, you don't want to carry that around all night. It's bulky. [00:27:06] Speaker B: So Tuxedo Mask says to himself, if the secret. If the secret treasure is the silver crystal Then maybe we'll be able to tell me who I really am. And he sees Usagi. He sees Usagi and he says, I know that girl. A princess. Okay. How does he not know it's Usagi, the girl who throws garbage and shoes at him? It's because all she is is wearing a dress. That's the only difference. [00:27:30] Speaker A: Okay, so here's. Here's my theory, okay? Because Kenji, Papa, her dad, also didn't recognize her because she is transformed using the power of the disguise tin there. It might be like slightly an illusion. So she just looks just different enough. That's my argument. [00:27:49] Speaker B: That was. That was it, right? I was going with. I was. All right. I was going with that as well. Her not recognizing Nephrite is unforgivable. Because there's no. There's no excuse for. She. She. She's her enemy. She should definitely be aware of what he looks like. [00:28:05] Speaker A: Yes, very much so. Yeah. [00:28:07] Speaker B: Now, Tuxedo Mask. Not recognizing that the princess is Usagi. I'm. I'll. I'll. I'll allow that the transformation pattern has altered her look or has caused some cast some sort of enchantment so that people don't recognize her as Usagi, but recognize her as the beautiful princess. [00:28:25] Speaker A: Listen, the man has amnesia, okay? He's got amnesia. You can't expect him to remember everything, right? [00:28:34] Speaker B: Well, it flashes back to the princess dream once again. [00:28:37] Speaker A: Yes. And he says. [00:28:39] Speaker B: And then we cut to, I feel. [00:28:41] Speaker A: Like I've met her before. [00:28:43] Speaker B: All right. Next we cut to Nephrite and Naruto standing on a balcony. Naru says, Mr. Sandraween is really wonderful. I don't care what happens after tonight. And Neprite says, you sparkle like a star gleaming in the sky. And he says, please look at me, Naru. And she says, all right. And she looks into his eyes. [00:29:02] Speaker A: She thinks it's like going to be a kiss, I think. [00:29:06] Speaker B: A kiss? Yeah, I think so. And instead, Nephrite reaches his hand out towards her neck, and his hair flies up in the air, and his eyes glow behind his mask. A purple flaming demon with a red face that looks like Nephrite leaves his body and enter Naru's. [00:29:24] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:24] Speaker B: What would you call that thing? I'm calling it a demon. It's like a purple demon. I think in the manga, he calls it his shadow. He calls it his shadow in the manga. Did you realize that? [00:29:33] Speaker A: Yeah. Which. Which is technically what it is called. That it doesn't even look like the word Nephrite. Wow. [00:29:42] Speaker B: In turn, it's like A purple flaming blob with his face in it. Is what? Yeah, is what it is. Now, in the. In the manga, this whole Naru storyline doesn't exist. No, in the manga, he transforms himself to look like a female interpreter. That's how he gets into the embassy and gets close to the princess. Is he. Yeah, he transforms himself into the interpreter. This whole Naru storyline doesn't exist in the manga. [00:30:08] Speaker A: Yep. Naru is not. Not as prominent in the manga, which is why we love to see her in the anime. Love that girl. [00:30:16] Speaker B: So, yeah, so this purple shadow comes out of Nephrite, and it jumps into Naru's body, and Nephrite says, now you will do anything. I say, Naru Osaka. And Naru's skin is now tinted purple like a suffocation victim. [00:30:31] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. [00:30:33] Speaker B: And her eyes glow, and she just says, yes. [00:30:38] Speaker A: Yes, yes. And I thought it was interesting. First. First Naru's mother in episode one, now Naru herself. [00:30:47] Speaker B: Yeah, the Osaka family is big on getting possessed. [00:30:50] Speaker A: I mean, you know, that's what they're there for. [00:30:53] Speaker B: I guess we're gonna have to call that couple from the conjuring and get them over Ed Nuran. All right, so then we cut to commercial. [00:31:02] Speaker A: Yep, bumper time. [00:31:04] Speaker B: We come back from commercial, and there's. There's Usagi at the ball, and she says, I finally got to become a princess, but what's the point? It's no fun if I'm all by myself. [00:31:15] Speaker A: And then he shows up, it's to see the mask, and he's asking her to dance, and she is giddy. She's like, dreams do come true. This is wonderful. My night is complete. I am a pretty, pretty princess. And then while they're dancing, she has a moment, and she feels this nostalgia, this memory. And she says, I feel like long, long ago. Tuxedo Mask and I danced together. Curious, curious, curious. [00:31:46] Speaker B: It's curious. So one thing I want to mention about this is as soon as they start dancing, everybody else stops dancing, and it's just the two of them. It's just like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Once he started dancing, everybody else stopped, and a big circle opens up just for them to dance in. [00:32:06] Speaker A: Yeah, well, they're the most lazy dancing. More lazy, elegant couple. [00:32:10] Speaker B: Okay, so here's the thing. Here's the thrust of this scene is what happened in their collective past. What is this thing that they both keep alluding to that seems so familiar? I recognize her. We've done this before, you know. I don't know why I'm just compelled to. So. So was this a past life? That's what I'm thinking. [00:32:30] Speaker A: Maybe. [00:32:31] Speaker B: I'm thinking that because. Because the thing of it is, is that now Mamaru has memory problems. We know that. He's. He's trying to figure out what's going on. Usagi. [00:32:40] Speaker A: I don't even know who he is, really. [00:32:43] Speaker B: Right. Usagi was just Usagi until she met Luna. Till the day she met Luna. [00:32:48] Speaker A: Yep. [00:32:48] Speaker B: And then the day she met Luna, she was granted superpowers and she was given a brooch and a pen. And the. The pen can be used to transform her into various disguises. The brooch is used to transform her into Sailor Moon. When she is Sailor Moon, she. Her tiara can be removed and used as a weapon. But she also has. She also is able to defend herself against, like, magical attacks and stuff like that. And she has. She has some super strength. And we're also going to talk about. About the Sailor Guardians. We're going to talk about this problem I have with people jumping from great distances, because it happens again in this episode. But at this point. At this point, all we're doing is wondering what happened in their collective past. [00:33:36] Speaker A: Yes. [00:33:37] Speaker B: All right. Now, Purple Naru walks up to the double doors being guarded by two bodyguards. And they say, who are you? And she says, my name is Naru. I've come to see the princess. We're good friends. Now we cut to the interior. Cut to the interior of the. Of the Embassy Suite. In the. In the Princess Suite. And there's Princess Diamond, a frumpy girl with short brown bob looking at herself in the mirror. And she wears glasses and. And they get the swirls in them just like Umino does. [00:34:08] Speaker A: Umino swirl glasses. [00:34:10] Speaker B: And the princess. So in the manga, they call her Princess D, and they call it the Kingdom of D. But in this one, she's Princess diamond from the Kingdom of Diamond. [00:34:20] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:34:20] Speaker B: Everybody's only interested in the secret treasure. If I were pretty, someone might come to see me. I feel like I've an appendage attached to the treasure. Poor princess. [00:34:29] Speaker A: Aw, I feel so bad for her. She's adorable. [00:34:32] Speaker B: Then Naru barges in. Naru barges into the room, and she says, it's me, Naru. Oh, can I come in to see you, Princess? And then the lonely princess says, of course. And. Yeah, okay, we gotta talk for a minute about security. So the opening of the episode, right, they have police checkpoints. That's how serious this visit is from the princess of the King of Diamonds is. We have police Checkpoints. Now, insecurity to get into the embassy is super lame because Usagi walked in by saying she was the princess of Ivanovitch. Tuxedo Mask got in. We have no idea how he got in. And same with Nephrite. Nephrite got in too. None of them had any issues. [00:35:18] Speaker A: Let's be honest. Nephrite probably used stars. He was like, maybe. Maybe he's just. I mean, Tuxedo Mask has a. Has the ability to just show up anywhere. And he does quite frequently. So who's to say that his. He just didn't like sneak in or like, you know, I'm just saying that we go from Down Under. [00:35:39] Speaker B: We go from police checkpoints to. Anybody can sneak into this event at the embassy. And here's. Here's my other. The other thing I'm thinking about, right, Was that this. This legendary secret treasure, right? That is going to be. It's never been revealed before. Nobody knows what it is. It's the legendary secret treasure. And they even hype it up in both the manga and the anime, saying it's the last. It's the last wonder of the world. Yeah, that's how big of a deal it is. How come the princess's parents aren't with her? [00:36:10] Speaker A: You know, they had important. Listen, you can't expect. [00:36:15] Speaker B: There couldn't have been anything more important to do than. Couldn't have been anything more important to that night than being there. And they just sent their daughter with two bodyguards. And Naru, by the way. So Naru looks like the drowned body from the Shining, and she just charges into the princess's suite. Those guys aren't bodyguards? [00:36:36] Speaker A: No. [00:36:37] Speaker B: Come on in, Purple girl. [00:36:38] Speaker A: Yeah. And okay, so anyway, real quick, slight, slight segue. Do you know any Sanrio characters? I just. [00:36:46] Speaker B: Hello Kitty. [00:36:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:36:48] Speaker B: Yeah, I know Bats Maru too. [00:36:50] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Batsmaru the of Penguin. So in my notes I wrote, Princess diamond graciously lets her in. She thinks Naru seems fun. But best Naru is not. [00:37:03] Speaker B: Right? And she does. She says. That's what she says. She says, you seem like fun. What did you want to see me about? And Naru's eyes start glowing and she says, the legendary secret treasure. It's leaving here now. The purple demon leaves Naru's body and enters the Princess Diamond's body. And then Naru collapses. So Naru. Naru just basically went from thinking she was going to kiss Mr. Sanjuine to being possessed to barging into the princess suite. And then basically as. As a delivery method to deliver the shadow Demon into The princess. [00:37:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:37:39] Speaker B: So now Nephrite has. [00:37:41] Speaker A: That's. That's. That's Peak Naru. Because she's just kind of like. She is the consistent damsel in the stress. [00:37:49] Speaker B: She's a utility character. [00:37:51] Speaker A: She is. [00:37:51] Speaker B: She just is. They just use her to put the storyline along. [00:37:53] Speaker A: She has a connection to the. To the main character when she's normal. So we're going to use her as the. As the plot device. [00:38:01] Speaker B: Exactly. Poor Naru. I just feel bad for Naru. [00:38:04] Speaker A: Same. [00:38:05] Speaker B: Now she's. Now. She's just collapsed in the princess's suite. [00:38:08] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:38:09] Speaker B: And the princess is now under the control. Enough. Right? [00:38:11] Speaker A: Which is not a good thing. We don't want that. [00:38:14] Speaker B: No. Oh. She says move. You're in my way. I have the legendary secret treasure. Which you can just imagine is just Nephrite's voice. But it's in the princess's voice. [00:38:25] Speaker A: But she's all like. She's all gruff. [00:38:26] Speaker B: She blows past security and one of the bodyguards says did she look purple to you? And an alarm starts ringing in the embassy. Luna tells Usagi that the princess took the secret treasure and went to the balcony. [00:38:41] Speaker A: Yeah. And she's gotta like make a. Make a. She's gotta wander that way with Tuxedo Mask. Even though he doesn't know that she's Sailor Moon. But. Yeah. So. Yeah. [00:38:55] Speaker B: Yeah. And then a talking cat got her attention while she's dancing with. Dancing with Tukino Mask. And a talking cat gets her attention. [00:39:02] Speaker A: In Luna's defense. Luna was trying to be subtle about it. She jumped up on Usagi's shoulder and said it quietly. [00:39:09] Speaker B: But Tuxedo Mask knows who Luna is. Tuxedo Mask should have recognized Luna. [00:39:14] Speaker A: Maybe he forgot. I will go now. I will leave now. I'm sorry. [00:39:21] Speaker B: All right. Usagi sees Nephrite on the ground below. And Usagi tries to stop the princess from tossing the treasure down in upright. [00:39:29] Speaker A: Yeah. She's like. Please. I'll talk some sense into you. And in return she gets pushed off a balcony. [00:39:36] Speaker B: The princess yells Let go of me. And pushes Usagi off the balcony. Luna is there. And she yells. Usagi. Tuxedo Mask catches her by the hand. [00:39:46] Speaker A: Yes. He does. [00:39:48] Speaker B: The princess knocks Tuxedo Mask and says it's time for both of you to take a ball. Which once again. That's enough. Right? [00:39:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:39:57] Speaker B: And then Luna lunges at the princess. And this is Luna Abermos Cat. Yeah. She. Yep. She knocks the princess down. Nephrite looks up at Tuxedo Mask and Usagi hanging on. And he Says Tuxedo Mask. You pest. Consider it your lucky day to die with a beautiful princess. And he raises his hands as if to cast a spell, but instead he's hit with a Fire Soul right in the face from Sailor Mars. [00:40:26] Speaker A: And can I just say, so nice of him to acknowledge the fact that Usagi is a beautiful princess. [00:40:32] Speaker B: That was. That was nice of him. [00:40:34] Speaker A: Like, as long as everyone can acknowledge that Usagi is a beautiful princess, then I'm happy. [00:40:38] Speaker B: Fair enough. Fair enough. So Sailor Mars and Sailor Mercury have transformed already because they noticed that. They said when they saw the princess. When they saw the princess, they must have noticed Nephrite on the ground and transformed. I don't have any problems. [00:40:56] Speaker A: He's kind of noticeable. Yeah. [00:40:58] Speaker B: He takes a Fire Soul right to the face. [00:41:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:41:01] Speaker B: And he takes no damage, but it does it. It interrupts his cast. Whatever he was going to cast at Tuxedo Mask gets interrupted, and the princess gets knocked unconscious. Because his connection to the Shadow Demon must have been broken with the Fire Soul as well. [00:41:17] Speaker A: Yeah. So now he's gotta. [00:41:19] Speaker B: Now he's gotta figure out, there's no way I'll let you harm Toshido Mask. And then Usagi slips, and she says. [00:41:26] Speaker A: Tuxedo Mask is mine. And I'm like, what the fuck, man? [00:41:30] Speaker B: When Usagi slips, Tuxedo Mask falls as he reaches for her. And then Luna instantly shows up with the umbrella in her mouth as well as what skin? So Luna. Luna knocks the princess down, ran down to the first floor coat check, got her ticket out, got the umbrella, and then ran up to the fourth floor balcony just in time to spit the umbrella out for Usagi to catch. And she pops open the. Pops open the umbrella. No, just hear me out. Pops open the umbrella. And the umbrella breaks their fall from a fourth story balcony window. Okay. [00:42:08] Speaker A: And you get the most. One of the most iconic scenes in Sailor Moon ever, which is so disturbing. [00:42:13] Speaker B: Because it's got bad physics. No umbrella in the world is going to break somebody's fall from any distance. There's not enough surface. There's not enough. Huh? [00:42:23] Speaker A: Not just an umbrella. That's a magic umbrella that came from the disguise pen. You can't put physics on the magic. [00:42:28] Speaker B: It's bad things. Okay? Because I can imagine. I can just imagine young girls watching this, watching this anime, and then jumping out of their second floor window with an umbrella, thinking it's gonna break their fall, which really did happen. It's something that happened to kids when I was growing up. Every now and then, you'd hear A story about some kid who tied a sheet around his neck and jumped out the second story window of their house so he could fly like Superman. Yeah, it's, it's. You can't, you can't put that in there. You say it's the most iconic moment in the, in the, in the series. It is. And I'm saying that it shouldn't be in there because they, because they would have fallen four stories. The umbrella, first of all, was a parasol. It would have, it would have like swooped up as soon as any air pressure went on it. [00:43:14] Speaker A: The magic. Parasol. Magic. And then they fall together. [00:43:20] Speaker B: I'm not going, I'm not, I'm not buying it. [00:43:22] Speaker A: It's really cute. And you have the moment where they're both falling and they're, they have the umbrella and they're floating and they're like hugging and it's so magical and cute and I love it. And nothing you can say regarding physics can ruin this for me because it's a magical girl show and magic exists and girls who watch this show know magic like that isn't obtainable. [00:43:48] Speaker B: If everything that came out of the transformation fan was magical, she wouldn't have gotten the drink, wouldn't have stained her dress. She would, it would have been, it would have been repellent to the beverage that stained her dress. So she's a magical dress? [00:44:01] Speaker A: No, not necessarily. Not necessarily. Because you know, to have a, it's just like, you know, you can have the stuff you put on your clothes to make it water repellent. That's a magical effect. You gotta, you gotta put, you gotta do the prep work. [00:44:20] Speaker B: Moon Tira Scotchgard. Moon Tira Scotchgard. [00:44:24] Speaker A: She didn't say that she was going to become a magical princess with a non staining dress. Like she just said, make me into a princess. [00:44:32] Speaker B: Enough said. It is cute that they float down together, I'll give you that. [00:44:36] Speaker A: Yes, it is. And it's adorable and I love it. [00:44:40] Speaker B: So when they hit the ground, Tuxedo Mask chases after Nephrite, but Sailor Mercury stops him and she says, answer me. Just who are you and Tuxedo Mask, just to answer that question. But I can't. Yeah, that's the reason I need to solve the mystery of the legendary Silver Crystal. And Mercury says, well, are you an enemy or are you on our side? And Tuxedo says, if we're after the same thing, maybe I am an enemy. And then he leaps over a tall red iron fence and he's gone. [00:45:09] Speaker A: Yep, yep, yep. [00:45:12] Speaker B: So here's my thing is that Mercury could have asked him that question anytime. Why did she interrupt him from chasing Nephrite? She stopped him from chasing the bad guy. [00:45:22] Speaker A: I think it was that pressing finding. [00:45:24] Speaker B: Out who he was. [00:45:25] Speaker A: I think it was because she. After last encounter with Nephrite and Tuxedo Mask, she is now cautious to his motives because he hasn't really told them anything. There's been a lot of subterfuge from the Dark Kingdom. She's trying to take the cautious approach here instead of instantly trusting him because he's cute. [00:45:50] Speaker B: Good point. Good point. So. But Usagi, on the other hand, is just. Is just standing there starstruck with throbbing hearts for eyes. Me says, isn't that guy something? And Luna says, stop daydreaming and transform. So Moon Princess Power makeup. She transforms. Now here's the thing. Is that. So we've determined that there's a crowd of people outside of the embassy trying to get in. So there's a whole. There's a whole crowd of people out on the ground floor of the embassy. They're watching what's going on. And she transforms in front of everybody. [00:46:26] Speaker A: I think she tried. From what it looked like. It looked like they were like in the courtyard, like the yard area, which is big, and it looked like that. It had really high hedges. So my theory is. Is that she is hiding around the corner in a hedge maze. It's not a good theory, but this is what I'm going with. Coming off the fly based on. [00:46:53] Speaker B: I'm just saying that there's some. There's some continuity errors in this episode. Some things should have. There's some holes in the script. [00:46:59] Speaker A: Magical magic. [00:47:00] Speaker B: And then. And then they cut to the. Cut to the dad and he's like, wow, that was unexpected. I've got a scoop. So is. Is it unexpected that Sailor Moon showed up? Is it? [00:47:10] Speaker A: Yeah, The Sailor Moon showed up. That Princess D went crazy and is purple. That someone fell off a balcony. There's a lot happening. It's going to be a really good story. [00:47:21] Speaker B: So the Purple Princess was rendered unconscious when Nephrite lost his connection to her. But he regains his connection with Come to life, my little puppet. And the princess gets up from lying on the balcony and she yells, get out of my way. And anybody who tries to stop me will be sacrificed to the great ruler and cast a spell. Swirling black lines that knock all the guests down. [00:47:46] Speaker A: Yeah. And probably also stole their energy, if we're perfectly honest. It probably happened. [00:47:52] Speaker B: And so then the Sailor Guardians, in this short in this brief period of time have gotten up to the fourth floor now and on the pretty guardian of love and justice. And you know, I'm Sailor Moon. I'm Sailor Mars. I'm Sailor Mercury. And she's. And Sailor Moon says, I'm telling you right now, you're going to pay, you evil monster for possessing the soul of the pure hearted Princess Diamond. And Princess says, I'm taking the legendary Silver Crystal. It's mine. And then we cut to Luna who says, silver Crystal. And then the princess cast. Then the princess casts black smoke and descends, descends down onto the lawn. And at this point the Sailor Guardians jump from four stories. They jump to the fourth floor, valley ground. So they obviously can. They obviously can take some damage, Edward. I mean you have to go with that. That's part of being. [00:48:46] Speaker A: When they try to be scouts, they get springy legs. [00:48:51] Speaker B: So yeah, they're able. So. So we've determined that they can take a four story fall. @ least we know that much. [00:48:57] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah, they can't. [00:48:59] Speaker B: Unless of course even higher. [00:49:01] Speaker A: Yeah, but they can't. Only if they're transformed into their sailor soldier outfits. Because clearly before they needed the umbrella. [00:49:09] Speaker B: Correct. Yeah, exactly. Fair enough. All right. At that point, Rig cast a spell to rid the princess of the evil spirit. And what did she say? What's the spell? What's the spell? [00:49:23] Speaker A: You know what, Akir Tai. I don't know the all the beginning part because. [00:49:28] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like. It's like there's words. It's like Kunzo. Kunzo. Yeah. She says all these things. Yeah. So you don't know it? [00:49:35] Speaker A: Not off the top of my head, no. [00:49:37] Speaker B: But it's fair enough. [00:49:39] Speaker A: It does have actual significance, which I will make myself a note to talk about that again because we talked about it a little in previous episode. [00:49:50] Speaker B: So Rey casts a spell to exorcise the demon. Princess falls to the ground and the purple flaming demon rises out and they look at it and they say it's nephrite and Nephrite. The nephrite demon casts a spell of black smoke and says, die slowly. [00:50:07] Speaker A: Die a painful death. [00:50:08] Speaker B: And then Mars says, I can barely move. And Moon says, if he keeps us up, we'll all be killed. And then Mercury says, I'm going to try something. And so Sailor Mercury is able to move enough to cast a bubble spray. And the bubble spray removes the effects of Nephrite spell. [00:50:23] Speaker A: They save the day. That's why Sailor Mercury is crucial. [00:50:29] Speaker B: Well, we know that bubble spray removes status effects, so that makes sense. Yeah, whatever. It was a paralyzation spell, obviously. [00:50:36] Speaker A: And. [00:50:37] Speaker B: And so she. So she cleanses. She cleanses the. The paralyzation status and gives Sailor Moon the time to cast a moon tiara action, which hits the demon in the face. And the demon disappears. And that's it. The Mutiara action gets rid of the demon. [00:50:57] Speaker A: Yes. [00:50:57] Speaker B: Princess diamond comes too. And she says, what have I been doing? And then Luna says, I wonder if you're the princess we're looking for. And the princess, then she's had her glasses knocked off when she fell to the ground. And she puts her. [00:51:12] Speaker A: I have something to say about that. [00:51:14] Speaker B: Okay. By the way, the princess looks exactly like the princesses drawn in the manga. They're drawn exactly the same way. [00:51:20] Speaker A: Yep. Yeah. [00:51:21] Speaker B: So she puts her glasses back on. And then Luna says, well, what's your answer? [00:51:26] Speaker A: First. First. First she says the iconic line. My glasses. I can't see a thing without my glasses. [00:51:33] Speaker B: True. [00:51:34] Speaker A: Yes. [00:51:35] Speaker B: And so Luna says, well, what's your answer? And then the princess grows alarmed and she says, that cat just talked to me. And says, oh, well, looks like. Looks like. Looks like she isn't our princess after all. She faints and they're like. And Yep, she does. And the guests recover and they say, what happened? Why are we laying on the floor? And then the dad. Dad is like, oh, no, my film's been ruined. [00:52:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:52:01] Speaker B: Conveniently enough. Yeah. [00:52:02] Speaker A: My memory card has been corrupted. [00:52:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Then Naru comes to in the princess suite, and she's probably. [00:52:11] Speaker A: So I bet you Naru isn't even, like, confused anymore when this happens to her. It just like, happens and she's like, okay, all right. Fuck, this sucks. I'm waking up once more in a random place. [00:52:27] Speaker B: She would. She would do poorly if she took the. She took the Betty Ford questionnaire of. Are you an alcoholic? Because she had blackouts. She has. Her behavior has changed. She would do poorly on that inventory. Yeah. [00:52:42] Speaker A: Poor Naru. [00:52:43] Speaker B: All right, then the event of the night still goes on, and the princess reveals that the secret Treasure is a 2000 carat diamond cut to look like the original Princess diamond, which looks exactly like Prince Diamond. Yeah. And cutting up. Right. And he's like, what a waste of time and energy. And he dematerializes probably back to his mansion. [00:53:08] Speaker A: Can I. Okay, before we get to this. Before we get to this last little bit, I want to say something about Princess diamond and her glasses. So if you notice, when she loses her glasses, she is actually an extremely adorable girl. I mean, she's adorable with the glasses too, but like, she's like. [00:53:26] Speaker B: Right. [00:53:27] Speaker A: What would classify as pretty, quote unquote. She's not as dorky as she lets herself to believe. This is my theory on why secretly Umino. [00:53:38] Speaker B: Okay. [00:53:38] Speaker A: Because, you know, we don't know what Umino looks like under those glasses. You could take those off. He could be BAE material. We don't know. [00:53:46] Speaker B: Well, you never know that in the manga. You know that in the. In the manga, Umino's there when the princess loses her glasses. And beforehand, when they first see the princess, somebody says she looks like Umino. And then when her glasses come off, we see that she's a beautiful princess. [00:54:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:54:05] Speaker B: You know, it's that. It's that trope. It's like. It's like the librarian who has an updo, who pulls off the glasses and shakes down her long hair and she's gorgeous. That's that same sort of a trope. And then in the manga, it shows Umino, and then it shows Umino without glasses. And he's handsome. So that's obviously where you. [00:54:24] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. And I support that theory. So I want Umino to be handsome in the anime because he's charming. [00:54:32] Speaker B: Okay. In the anime, he's not even there at the embassy. Now Luna says, well, that was a bust. Looks like we're back to square one. I wonder where Usagi is enjoying her party. Usagi is transformed back into the princess outfit. And she's like, oh, my, I'm thirsty from all that fighting. And then she takes. [00:54:51] Speaker A: I need some juice. [00:54:52] Speaker B: Okay. [00:54:53] Speaker A: Juice. [00:54:54] Speaker B: So she does some juice in the. In the. In the subtitle version. In the dub, she says, I'm gonna have some of this punch. [00:55:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:55:03] Speaker B: What it really is, is alcohol. [00:55:05] Speaker A: Yes, it is. It's like a martini. [00:55:07] Speaker B: And we know this. We know this because her cheeks get all rosy and then she faints in tuxedo masks. Arms. [00:55:13] Speaker A: Yes. And she's hiccupping. Yeah, she's hiccuping. [00:55:17] Speaker B: So now we have underage drinking. [00:55:19] Speaker A: Yes. [00:55:19] Speaker B: And then. So underage drinking, tuxedo mask, taking advantage of the drunk girl, takes her out to the balcony, and he says, I can feel it. I kissed you once a long, long time ago. Great rationalization for taking advantage of the drunk girl, by the way. [00:55:35] Speaker A: Listen, he has amnesia. That's not an excuse. That's. It's really not an excuse. I've just. That's my hand wave for now. But no excuse for what he did. He did not have consent, and she was not consenting. And she let her know. [00:55:50] Speaker B: He kisses the princess because he thinks it's the princess. [00:55:53] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:55:54] Speaker B: And he says, I can feel my memory coming back. And then Usagi's eyes open up, and she's like this gentle warmth. It feels so familiar. I know I've felt it somewhere before. I've felt it many, many times. So that's how it is. [00:56:10] Speaker A: What could it mean? [00:56:12] Speaker B: I felt it many. So she's. She. So she has a. She has this memory of kissing Tuxedo Mask many, many times. [00:56:19] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:56:19] Speaker B: So he knows that he. So Mamaru wakes up, but when in the dream, he's wearing the tuxedo mask outfit, so he has to know that he's. Tuxedo Mask. That's my. [00:56:31] Speaker A: Yeah, that's. [00:56:33] Speaker B: That's where I get that from. [00:56:34] Speaker A: He knows, but he. I don't think he understands it. He's just like, this thing happens to me, and I don't understand why, but every once in a while, I turn into this guy and I just have to take care of things, and this is my quest. They make it really, really ambiguous in the. In the anime, but in the manga, it's a whole heck of a lot straightforward. He still has, like, issues remembering stuff, but he's just like, yeah, I need to get information about this crystal I'm looking for. So I dress up and go. And I'm like a cat burglar. Like, he's going to steal diamonds and stuff so that he can figure out who the hell he is. So. [00:57:17] Speaker B: So in this. In this case, the. The Yoma was technically male in this because it was Nephrite. [00:57:24] Speaker A: Yeah, but can we classify that as a Yoma? [00:57:28] Speaker B: Exactly. I don't think so. Yeah, it was Nephrite's Shadow Demon. [00:57:34] Speaker A: Arguably, you could say that it is female because both Naru and Princess D were possessed. [00:57:41] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true. That's true. So although they never fought the princess, the only one who fought the princess was Luna. Luna attacked the princess. Nobody else did. Mars did dispel the possessions Rageous Cast and Exorcism. [00:57:55] Speaker A: Yeah. Which is something that she has from her priestess training, not something that she has for being Sailor Mars. [00:58:01] Speaker B: Right. It's very convenient that she's a priestess. [00:58:05] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:58:05] Speaker B: All right, do you have anything else to say about this episode? Because I'm just going to mention that up next is Taru being manipulated by Nephrite, and it's called Wish Upon a Star, Naru's First Love. So we're going to continue with this Naru and Nephrite thing. [00:58:21] Speaker A: Ooh, so intense. [00:58:24] Speaker B: Which I'm glad Because I feel bad for Naru. [00:58:27] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:58:27] Speaker B: He's being. You know, this is. This is a cautionary tale about. About falling for the bad guy. [00:58:33] Speaker A: It's true. Very true. [00:58:35] Speaker B: All right. Do you have anything? So. So unfortunately for Sailor Moon, when she goes to do her Betty Ford Am I an Alcoholic inventory, she's going to have to write down that her first kiss was under the influence. Because that's one thing to talk about is. Is that. Are you. Are you only able to. To be intimate if you're under the influence of alcohol? So. [00:58:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:58:55] Speaker B: Questionable storytelling, by the way, if you're going to be an inspiration for young girls, you know. Now, mind you, she drank accidentally. She drank accidentally. She thought it was juice or. [00:59:07] Speaker A: It's true. [00:59:07] Speaker B: Or punch. [00:59:08] Speaker A: And it's also. We also have to remember in context, this came out in the 90s, and that was a time where certain things were not as frowned upon. I guess you could say it was a different world entirely. [00:59:25] Speaker B: But even though. Even though she didn't give consent, she obviously enjoyed it. Her first kiss. [00:59:29] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:59:30] Speaker B: I mean, she didn't push him away. Her eyes were open. [00:59:33] Speaker A: Sagi dreams about kissing Tuxedo masks many, many a time. [00:59:36] Speaker B: Yeah. So it's not that. [00:59:40] Speaker A: That is an excuse. I want to make that perfectly clear. [00:59:42] Speaker B: It's definitely something. I mean that if she hadn't have drank, so if they would have just cut out her drinking the punch and just cut to them on the balcony, then I wouldn't have had any problem with it. You know what I mean? [00:59:55] Speaker A: It's very true. [00:59:57] Speaker B: But I'm glad they left it in because that's how they decided to tell the story. At that time. She was a little tipsy, and then Tuxedo Bass took her out to the balcony to get some air, and then he decided to kiss her, you know? [01:00:09] Speaker A: Yeah, he had. [01:00:10] Speaker B: He had to make his move then because she was. He thought she was a princess. [01:00:14] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:00:15] Speaker B: As far as he knew, he was never going to see her again, so he had to make his move at that time. It's all good. [01:00:19] Speaker A: Of course. [01:00:20] Speaker B: I don't know. You know, it's. It's nobody. [01:00:22] Speaker A: No, nobody will rationalize it. So it's okay. It's a children's shit. [01:00:25] Speaker B: Nobody, Nobody walked. Nobody woke up the next day. Ashamed, you know, so that's. That's. That. I think that's the important part there. All right. All right. You want to talk about social media? [01:00:37] Speaker A: Yeah, of course. As always, we are on [email protected] acrossmooniverse had a brain fart there for a second.
