Episode Transcript
[00:00:01] Speaker A: We are the super nerdy sailor guardians who fight for love and justice. And this is across the mooniverse.
Hello and welcome to across the Moodiverse. I'm Maddie.
[00:00:30] Speaker B: I'm Mike.
[00:00:32] Speaker A: And we're here recording.
[00:00:34] Speaker B: Welcome, everybody.
[00:00:36] Speaker A: Recording again.
[00:00:38] Speaker B: And what Maddie means by that is that we already recorded this episode, and it didn't record my audio at all. So it's just Maddie talking to nobody was what we had to work with.
[00:00:49] Speaker A: Which, I mean, you know, not that unusual for me, but I do have a tendency to talk to myself a lot.
[00:00:59] Speaker B: So given the fact that we recorded this back, I don't know, three, four years ago, and then that makes this at least our third time talking about this episode.
[00:01:09] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah. At least the third time. So by this point, we know this episode inside and out, and we have very strong feelings about several things.
[00:01:21] Speaker B: Believe me, this episode has been well researched at this point.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: Yes, yes. Very much so.
[00:01:27] Speaker B: I wanted to bring up something that we talked about at the end of the last episode.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Which is about Jade's demise and how it takes place in the manga versus the anime. And this is me showboating, grandstanding, whatever you want to call it.
I have read the manga. So those of you who are interested in the manga, J dies in the episode that we first meet. Jaylon mars in the buses.
He dies on the bus in the manga, and he's actually killed on the bus by the pen.
Sarah Mercury had the pen, and they vanquished J dia with the pen. Then, because we see in the next chapter of the manga, it doesn't open with. But the first time we see Dark Kingdom, we see nephrite, and we see a dead jade. I see, like, in a coffin or something. Yeah, he refers to. He refers to jade as one of the four generals, which I don't believe.
I don't believe that term comes out. Has come up in the. In the anime. I don't know if it ever does.
[00:02:40] Speaker A: You know, honestly, I can't remember if it comes up in the anime, but in the manga, there's a. There's a lot more lore into who they are. Jadeite, Nefer, and all that.
[00:02:52] Speaker B: Yeah. And also he says this is the purpose for which you were resurrected. So JD was dead before any of this started, and then he was resurrected to go and get the silver criminal or something.
[00:03:07] Speaker A: King Su isho, if you're gonna be japanese about it, which I will.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: Silver crystal, correct.
[00:03:15] Speaker A: Yeah, silver crystal.
I think in the original dub, it was called the millennium silver crystal for some reason.
[00:03:24] Speaker B: That's weird.
[00:03:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
Silver millennium crystal, one of the two. It was weird.
[00:03:32] Speaker B: At any rate, that answers you. Could. We were kind of. We were a little bit unsure about. About what. What was, uh, um, what the deal was as far as that goes.
And so that's that. I looked it up, and that's what happened. Nephro, he's already been introduced because in the beginning of that chapter, before sailor and Mars is introduced, that's when Nephrite says the reason that Jedi fails is because he uses monsters made out of dirt. So we've already seen Nephron talking to Daryl, and in the manga, Nephrote doesn't get promoted. He volunteers.
Well, now that Jedi is dead, I'll take it on myself to go retrieve Silverquist and bail decided. Yeah.
[00:04:19] Speaker A: And I was like, cool, let's work for me.
[00:04:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
When we get all of this energy and give it to the leader, we'll resurrect Jade again.
So it's different in the anime. Beryl has condemned him to the eternal sleep.
[00:04:39] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:40] Speaker B: Yeah. It's definitely a difficult handling Jade and his eyes.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: It's left very open ended on whether or not he can come back. In the anime and the manga, it's like, well, we can do this, but, you know, we got to do. We got to get the energy first, so.
[00:04:57] Speaker B: Right.
[00:04:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:58] Speaker B: So that. Now, season one, episode 14, a new enemy appears. Nephrite's evil crest.
[00:05:06] Speaker A: Nephrite's evil crest.
[00:05:10] Speaker B: And I was trying to figure out what was meant by that, but it's never. It's evil crest. But when we get to it, then I'll. Then I'll say, this is evil crest.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
I, of course, know exactly what you're referencing, and I was like, oh, I can tell you. Oh, no, wait. We got to talk about that later. It comes up later.
[00:05:26] Speaker B: All right, so what happens in this is it opens in.
What did we do? Decide that room is. It's. It's basically Beryl's chamber.
[00:05:39] Speaker A: It's her room where she received that meeting hall chamber.
[00:05:50] Speaker B: Anyway, it's got that. It's got that trippy background that is constantly changing. Yeah.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:54] Speaker B: It's kind of a. It's like curtains of color that are just kind of cascading down.
[00:05:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:59] Speaker B: And then we. We hear the sound of Nephrite's voice, and he says, exactly. But Barrel says, now that you're in charge, what's your plan?
And then nephrite is. Jadeite spends all this time and energy gathering energy from all these different people as a waste. I'm gonna get all the we need from a single person. And then barrels. And then Barrel says, how is that. Is that possible? So she doesn't. We've talked about this before, but not that the audience is hurt, you know, Barrel says, is that possible?
I was thinking, how does Beryl know? I mean, why, if energy for me just gathered from a single person, why would Beryl not know that? And you have a theory on this, right?
[00:06:56] Speaker A: I do.
[00:06:57] Speaker B: I do.
[00:06:58] Speaker A: Yeah. I can't remember what my original theory was.
Damn it. You put me on the spot. I don't know. Oh, I do. She's middle management.
[00:07:09] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:07:10] Speaker A: Yes. So my theory is that she's middle management. So you got the lackeys who are on the floor doing the thing, the nine to five getting shit done. That's your jadeite. That's your nephrite, that's the yoma. And then you got. You got whoever the great leader is that we're getting on the path, that's the CEO. Right. And you got Beryl, and Beryl's there, and she's there to just manage these fools and look good for the higher ups. So she doesn't really know what's going on. It's like, you know when you're in a big old corporation, it's like.
It's like the show undercover boss, if you will.
Like, the boss shows up, and she's like, I had no idea it was so hard to do this. My gosh. I didn't even know what my employees were doing. Only Beryl doesn't give anybody tons of cash. At the end, she just sentences them to eternal sleep.
[00:08:04] Speaker B: Right. And the thing that I found interesting was that was that junior was sentenced to eternal sleep because he failed to stop the sailor scouts.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:14] Speaker B: Not because it was admitted that he had. He had been able to collect energy that you give him that.
[00:08:23] Speaker A: Although there were so many of him in a void, he had to be doing something.
[00:08:28] Speaker B: Exactly. So he helped all the good energy.
[00:08:32] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:08:32] Speaker B: But he failed to stop the state of shows. Now it seems that nephrite's only. Only responsibility is to collect energy once again. So he's. You know, it's like, I guess. I guess when you first start the job, you can't be getting threatened with eternal sleep right away. You have to ease into it.
[00:08:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
You got to go through the training course first so you at least have some idea, vague or otherwise, what you're doing before you get called into the boss's office and they tell you that.
[00:09:02] Speaker B: You'Re underperforming so beryl is basically, how is that even possible? And then nucklight elaborates and he says something to the effect of just. Just as the stars determine an individual's destiny, so too the stars point out, because a person's energy is that there's a moment in time for which a person's energy is at its highest, and the stars will reveal that as well. And then, and then you hear this little cheeky, this little annoying voice.
And then we see. We see this guy. He kind of enters from the top of flame and he floats down like he's sitting on an invisible chair that is floating down into frame. He's sitting in midair with his legs crossed. And he's like, boy, somebody seems awfully confident about their plan. You know, all that. All that necros is that he's going to consult stars to find out when. When, you know, somebody's going to be at their highest energy.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: I'm gonna do some astrology, guys.
[00:10:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
What's the other guy's name? Zois.
[00:10:10] Speaker A: Zoisite.
[00:10:10] Speaker B: How do you say it?
[00:10:11] Speaker A: Zoysight.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: Yeah, he's like. He's like, what are you doing here?
Which was my thought, too.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: Like, there is. Yeah.
Soy side. Just creeping.
[00:10:24] Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. And like. And how come Bill doesn't have any control over her conference room? There's people sitting there who just materialize and float in and start questioning the plans of your. Of your. Of your underlings. I don't know.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: I feel like there's always like a background audience of just a bunch of Yoma. So I feel like she runs like a really loose ship in there. Like she. She wants to publicly humiliate her generals so that, you know, it's like power with fear almost. So she's like, yeah, no.
Yeah. Get in front of all of your underlings. I'm about to chew you out. All right, great. So, you know, Zoysai probably just is like, I can't wait to see this.
[00:11:06] Speaker B: Right? So he's like, what are you doing here? And then Zoysai says, just remember that overconfidence has been the down call of many. So now that's twice now that he's mentioned about never have confidence.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:21] Speaker B: That's also has to offer his nephew. Pretty much shuts him down right after that. And he says, I feel like we're in humanity's weaknesses and gather. And gather energy and I don't need your help. Yeah, I don't need you.
[00:11:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: And at which point, um, Zoe say neck. Right. Gives us a really dirty look. Yeah.
Scary. And then disappears.
[00:11:44] Speaker A: Disappears in a flurry of flower petals, it should be noted.
[00:11:50] Speaker B: Yes, exactly.
[00:11:52] Speaker A: It's beautiful.
So I love. I love. In my notes, it says, let's talk about zoicite. Who do we think they are? Why are they antagonizing nephrite? Why does nephrite have fried eggs on his shoulders?
That last question has nothing to do with zoicite, but I want to know.
[00:12:12] Speaker B: Right. Yeah.
Well, the. Let's talk about that. I assume it's like a brother because it seems like somebody who's closer than a co worker.
[00:12:21] Speaker A: It seems like, you know, they definitely have history.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Yeah, for sure. Although it could just be that they were. They were, you know, they've had to spend some time together in the dark kingdom. And so they say it's just. Just kind of taunting him. But I think they're brothers. That's my guess at this point.
[00:12:39] Speaker A: They do have that sort of mystic energy.
[00:12:43] Speaker B: You're gonna have to explain about the eggs.
[00:12:45] Speaker A: So. Okay. So you'll notice it in next episode, because I pointed this out to you last time, too, that all of the generals have the little epaulettes on their shoulders on their uniforms.
[00:12:59] Speaker B: Date.
[00:12:59] Speaker A: It's really simple. Nephrites look like fried eggs. Like, that is what is on his shoulders. I don't know what rank that indicates. I don't know what purpose it serves, but they are fried eggs.
It's like. It's like wiggly. Wiggly, like off white splotch, and then like a perfect half dome, dark red, like, orangey color. It looks exactly like a fried egg.
[00:13:27] Speaker B: Well, what did. What did. Jade. I have on his. It's on the arm. Right?
Where are the eggs located on the uniform?
[00:13:37] Speaker A: Well, that. No, the epaulettes are on the shoulders.
[00:13:40] Speaker B: On the shoulders. Yeah. Okay.
[00:13:42] Speaker A: Yeah. Jay didn't really have anything. Jade. I just was kind of. It's pretty plain.
[00:13:47] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:13:48] Speaker A: It's like, you know, he's the first boss, and then, you know, you go to the next boss and they're a little bit fancier.
[00:13:55] Speaker B: Right.
[00:13:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:13:56] Speaker B: So nev. Right's like a major is.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: I mean, I'm pretty. They're all generals.
[00:14:03] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:14:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:05] Speaker B: So JDY is a two star general or Nephrite's a two star general or a three star general.
[00:14:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:11] Speaker B: Yeah. But we don't know if it was seafaring and we would then, you know, we'd have admirals as well. But, yeah, we'll see. We'll see what happens.
For sure. 200 more. I'm sure there's plenty of time to learn how the ranking works in Dark Kingdom.
[00:14:28] Speaker A: Wait, no, it's. It's, uh. Wait. God, I have to do math. Hold on.
186.
Yeah, because this is episode 14, so 200 -14 yeah, sure, we'll go with that. I'm good at basic math sometimes. Not gonna pull up the calculator and check myself.
[00:14:51] Speaker B: So this little scene between, between Nephrite and barrel that's interrupted by birthite.
[00:14:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:57] Speaker B: Ends with barrel. Just saying that. Right. I leave it to you just like, you know, it's okay. Sure. If you think you can use astrology to figure out who's going to be at their peak energy and get all the energy we need from now on, person, go for it. That's just kind of.
[00:15:15] Speaker A: This is a, this is a self starting position.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: Fair enough. Then we cut you. We cut you a scene where, um, there's a group of reporters and they're. They're hounding somebody. We only see her legs.
[00:15:31] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:15:32] Speaker B: We don't see, but, but they're hounding this. This mystery female asking her about the upcoming tournament and if. If you could just do a comment. And she says, I I have to practice. And then we see her kind of duck into a park that has tennis courts. That's the word I'm looking for.
[00:15:54] Speaker A: Tennis courts, yes.
[00:15:57] Speaker B: Just like different. The Lord songs go down in the tennis courts and talk it up like, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. And so, um, that's all we see. That's. That's what we see. And then it cuts to shot of the town. And then we see that all of a sudden in the, in the skyline of the tower, we see a hillside.
[00:16:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:16:19] Speaker B: And then we punch in a little bit on that hillside. And there's a mansion.
[00:16:24] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:16:24] Speaker B: And I looked at a culture this time. I no longer think it's a church.
[00:16:28] Speaker A: Definitely.
[00:16:29] Speaker B: It's a mansion that has, it has very large windows, very tall windows. Nep. Right. Is consulting the stars. And it's got the same kind of dreamy background as the Dark Kingdom does as. Yeah, that's. That's what's seen outside the windows. I thought it was stained glass originally because it was very colorful, but it's not. It's the same kind of. Kind of dreamy waterfall colors, background miasma, weirdness.
[00:16:57] Speaker A: Yeah yeah.
[00:16:58] Speaker B: Just I think which is, which is meant to indicate other dimension. I think that's.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: That's what, that you gotta, you gotta be impressed by nephroids just for flair because Jada was always just like dark void, hand out, gathering energy and a ball in his hand. Nephrote's like, nah, go big or go home, bro. I got the company credit card.
[00:17:23] Speaker B: Yeah.
And so then. So he. He, uh. He's like, great Ciron. And. And, um, the archer shoots yellow into the Milky Way. I paid more attention this time, so I answer questions I had previously. And so that Archie shoots his arrow into the Milky Way. And Sagittarius. Sagittarius's arrow hits. But I can't say her name. Rui. Rui. Rui.
[00:17:54] Speaker A: Rui.
[00:17:54] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, it's Rui. And then they see the image of the girl who was being hounded by the press. She's now in her little tennis outfit, and she's sitting there only in tennis racket. She's the one who is going to be at her highest energy, is going to be in the upcoming dates.
[00:18:14] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:18:15] Speaker B: The stars have shown him that she will be at peak energy. And so that's who he's targeting to collect energy from.
[00:18:22] Speaker A: Yes. Rui Sayonji.
[00:18:25] Speaker B: Yeah. So he's playing tennis, and there'll be cut two. Usagi and Naru. Naru are watching this tennis match take place, and they're. They're cheering for.
They're cheering for Rui. And Aru says, way to go, sis.
[00:18:45] Speaker A: And that throws Usagi for a loop. She's like, my best friend has lied to me my entire life.
[00:18:54] Speaker B: Right. And she's like. She's like, how come you never told me this? For not telling me this, I shall punish you. That was kind of the name of the moon.
[00:19:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:04] Speaker B: Kind of a. Kind of a nod to her own, you know, her catchphrase when she. Where she does her own.
[00:19:11] Speaker A: Her superhero Persona. Yeah, yeah.
[00:19:15] Speaker B: Although that reminds on Naru because Naruto's never been there to see her transform that we know of.
[00:19:22] Speaker A: Well, I mean, very beginning because, you know, they were. They were beans in a jewelry shop. That's right.
But, um, she was already transformed when she showed up, though, so Naru didn't see her transform, but she definitely heard the speech.
[00:19:36] Speaker B: There you go. Yeah.
[00:19:38] Speaker A: But after that, we learned that Rui is not actually narrow's older sister.
[00:19:43] Speaker B: Yeah, go ahead.
[00:19:46] Speaker A: Yeah, they're just extremely close there when they're young.
Rui's mom is a frequent customer at the jewelry store, whereas, which, as we know from episode one, is owned by Naru's mom and Narayoma trying to pretend to be Naru's mom.
[00:20:04] Speaker B: And so Naru refers to Rui as big sis. That's the effective nickname. Big sis.
[00:20:10] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:20:13] Speaker B: And then, so we see Louise is doing quite well. She's. Yes, she has. She defeats.
She's, um, she's practicing with other, um, other students. It seems like other people roughly her age.
And she's, um. She is now. She be did a male student. And she's now matched up against a female student, when suddenly everybody's attention is drawn to. It's a. It's a big sports car.
[00:20:45] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:20:46] Speaker B: That looks a lot like a Ferrari test, Rosa. It very well might be. And I'll go ahead. Now, as you pointed out, the important part about this car is, what is that?
[00:20:58] Speaker A: It is american style, or rather the. That's how they describe it in all of the media about it. But it's driver on the left side.
[00:21:09] Speaker B: Right.
[00:21:10] Speaker A: Versus japanese cars, which is driver on the right.
[00:21:13] Speaker B: Yes.
So he's driving an exotic sports car. That's.
[00:21:18] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:21:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:21] Speaker A: Got a pensions for flair.
[00:21:23] Speaker B: Right. He's the opposite of the master of disguise.
[00:21:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:26] Speaker B: He's thinking on like, a sore thumb.
[00:21:28] Speaker A: He's kind of a hide in plain sight sort of guy.
[00:21:31] Speaker B: Yeah. And so the other girls who are in attendance of this, this tennis practice are, they're like, oh, wait, I know who that is. He just, he, he's the owner of a new company that's in.
[00:21:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:44] Speaker B: And Naru and sailor Moore have both. Like, he's hot.
[00:21:48] Speaker A: They're like, who his name is.
Go ahead, Masato Sanjoying.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: Yes, well, we find that on when he introduces himself.
[00:21:59] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:21:59] Speaker B: But first he gets out of the Ferrari. He's standing, he's standing outside of the tennis courts.
[00:22:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:04] Speaker B: And he's got, he's dressed like he's just walked out of an episode of Miami Vice, by the way.
[00:22:09] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:22:11] Speaker B: And so you got the sports, he's got the, like the casual white sports coat over the past colored shirt. He's got his hands in his pockets. And he just, without getting his hands out of his pockets, he jumps over it, which has got to be at least a twelve, maybe 14 foot, chain length fence, does a flip and lands in the tennis courts, which is perfectly impossible to do, by the way. I don't think anybody can do a front flip with their hands in their pockets.
[00:22:37] Speaker A: He would put Simone biles to shames.
[00:22:41] Speaker B: And Rui calls him out and says, hey, you can't just jump into the middle of the tennis court. We're playing tennis. He pays no attention to that. And he immediately tells her, you got your weight on the wrong foot.
And she's like, who are you going? That's when he introduces himself and he says that he's a tennis coach.
[00:23:01] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:23:01] Speaker B: And then he demands the racket from her opponent. Give me your racket. So the. The girl that Rui is playing against hands him a racket. And Rui says, tells Rui to serve to him. So she served to him. And he returns the serve.
And blisters pass. Have Ruby so fast that she hurts her hand trying to return it. Yeah. I mean, she's unable to return it because the ball is going so fast.
And so she's impressed by that. And he walks up to her and he says, I can help you. Her racket. When she tried to return the serve, her racket got knocked out of her hand. It's laying on the ground. And he reaches down and touches the racket, at which point he says. He says, oh, monster. Rui's energy, you know, make it increase and then gather it all up. Something like that. And then he puts an enchantment on it. And there's a little symbol that goes in the bottom of the racket. That's his craft. That's neck. Right, people. What?
[00:24:05] Speaker A: It's definitely not.
[00:24:08] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:24:09] Speaker A: Name drop. Roll credits. That's the end of the episode.
[00:24:15] Speaker B: That's. Don't you think that something you might not buy, people crest?
[00:24:18] Speaker A: Oh, 1000%. Yeah.
[00:24:20] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:24:20] Speaker A: That is that. And that is, of course, you know, I was facetious.
[00:24:25] Speaker B: I had missed what was clearly the crest.
[00:24:29] Speaker A: Um, you know, but also, at the same time, Sailor Moon is known for its some double meanings and things of that nature. Lots of. Lots of japanese media, they love their puns and their double meanings.
[00:24:45] Speaker B: Right. I've always worried that because there's. There's puns that come up later on in this episode, and they're tennis puns. They're. They're based on. They're based on tennis.
[00:24:55] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:56] Speaker B: And so I just. I wonder how that would work because, uh, I guess we'll talk about when we get there.
[00:25:02] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:25:03] Speaker B: We could talk about it then to see if it would be the same in Japanese or not. Maybe. Maybe you can answer that with giving your knowledge of the language. So let's see about that.
[00:25:12] Speaker A: I can say typically, just. Just as a preface to that, before we get there, typically, they have to edit the puns. They try and make them as similar as possible.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: Okay, so this, then I have a note here about, oh, he didn't mention anything about this Deville. This seems to be a crucial part of his plan, that he has enchanted this racket to basically boost her energy. Yeah, but I thought it was the stars that told him that her energy was going to be at its greatest. Now all of a sudden, he's put an enchantment on her racket that's gonna boost her energy.
[00:25:54] Speaker A: Like, you know, look it, so it's like, you know, like, when you are, like, it's like, it's like a funnel.
[00:26:06] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:26:06] Speaker A: Yeah. That's the only way I can think to describe it. It's just like, you know. Yeah. It's. Her energy is gonna be at her, its peak here, but we want to concentrate it into one place so that I can, I can consume it for the dark kingdom. So it's, it's kind of like a catalyst, if you will.
[00:26:27] Speaker B: Okay, I'm half frying that because he also says, he also says to the racket, he says about the racket, the more you use that, the more she uses that, the greater her energy will become. So it's based on, you know, the longer she uses the racket that's going to increase her energy, but that's how it's going to happen. So, and then we start to see some of that happen because all of a sudden, Rui picks up the racket, and she is up against her next opponent. Apparently, the girl lost out after. She's like, I'm done.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: I guess I'm out of here.
[00:27:03] Speaker B: Yeah, I took my racket out of it. I'm like, he's slain.
[00:27:06] Speaker A: It's not worth it.
[00:27:10] Speaker B: The young angel has now stepped in to be her opponent says, okay, but take it easy on me. And, um, she does not. She's now her eyes get, you know, kind of got a gloss over, and she, you know, she serves and it's a, you know, it's a blistering serve, so much so that it leaves a hole in the bottom.
[00:27:28] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:28] Speaker B: It puts a crater in the court.
[00:27:30] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:30] Speaker B: So the racket has definitely been gotten above.
[00:27:35] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:27:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:36] Speaker A: Now, plus one racket of slaying.
[00:27:41] Speaker B: And then she. Thanks.
Nep. Right?
[00:27:44] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:27:44] Speaker B: But he is disappeared.
[00:27:47] Speaker A: Yeah. He's got other shit to do.
[00:27:50] Speaker B: Well, I mean, clearly the whole, the whole driving the Ferrari and the thunder over the fence was to distract her into. He needed her to drop that racket so he have a chance to touch it and put the enchantment on it. And, I mean, what's that? Once I was done, he had no, he had no need to stick around.
[00:28:08] Speaker A: Yeah. He's like, yeah. Placed the time bomb. All right, time to go.
[00:28:12] Speaker B: Exactly.
[00:28:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:16] Speaker B: And so this scene ends with Rui saying, this feels great. So she notices a difference in how she feels. It can't simply be. Be because she now put your weight behind the ball as he instructs her to do. Or.
[00:28:37] Speaker A: No, no.
[00:28:38] Speaker B: You know. And then Nauru is like, not at all about this. Something doesn't seem right.
[00:28:44] Speaker A: She looks real concerned. She's just like, this is not. This is not how sis acts, right?
You guess you could say she's being suspicious.
[00:29:00] Speaker B: What were you saying about that, boss? Just a minute ago?
[00:29:03] Speaker A: I learned from the best.
[00:29:07] Speaker B: All right, you go ahead and set us up for the next scene. What happens next?
[00:29:12] Speaker A: This is. My notes are. Now that they're talking at the shrine, is that where your notes are?
[00:29:20] Speaker B: No, the next thing is Luna is at.
[00:29:24] Speaker A: Oh, yes.
[00:29:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:29] Speaker A: Yes.
I didn't note that.
[00:29:33] Speaker B: Checking in with HQ, which, by the way, so I don't know if it's ever said out loud, but. My subtitles.
I credit the voice of headquarters as Artemis, so that I have. I had a note about that. Do you know anything about that? Why is. Why are they calling that voice Artemis? Is that the name of the person she's talking to?
[00:29:56] Speaker A: I don't know. I guess we'll find out.
[00:29:59] Speaker B: And I believe. I believe Artemis is Apollo's sister in mythology, and she's the huntress. Is she also. Is she connected to the moon somehow?
[00:30:09] Speaker A: She might be.
[00:30:10] Speaker B: Okay, because it follows the sun God. So I thought maybe Artemis was. Had some affinity for the moon.
[00:30:17] Speaker A: Hold on, I'm. I'm getting.
Yeah, I'm getting the intern.
[00:30:22] Speaker B: Very good. Luna's at the standard v video game. This is a standard video game where she's communicating with HQ.
[00:30:32] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:30:32] Speaker B: And HQ. Let's learn to know that they've uncovered some information on the enemy. And they. They know that the Dark Kingdom is gathering energy, but they don't know to what. To what end. You started to gather energy. And Luna says, are you certain artists? Very emphatically. It's like. Yes, of course. Like, why would you question our intel?
Yeah. And so that's. It's pretty brief.
Luna finds out that that's what they're up to. That's. That's what's going on. The Dark Kingdom is gathering. Is gathering energy. Yes, that's the intel. Which you would think that by now, with everything that's happened, that they could. They could have kind of guessed that that's what had been going on with all these. With all these different plots and schemes of jade. I think they foiled.
[00:31:23] Speaker A: You would think.
[00:31:24] Speaker B: Yeah. They could put that together on their own.
[00:31:27] Speaker A: I mean, up until recently, it was just, I mean, Amy could, Amit could, Rey could probably give in enough time. I don't know about Usagi.
[00:31:39] Speaker B: Usagi. Maybe not. Yeah, exactly.
[00:31:41] Speaker A: I love her to bits, but I don't know about that one.
[00:31:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:31:45] Speaker B: So then we cut to. What's the name of the temple?
[00:31:49] Speaker A: It's called Hikari Shrine.
[00:31:52] Speaker B: Hikari shrine. Okay.
[00:31:53] Speaker A: Hikari.
[00:31:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Which is where Ray works as a attendant.
Her grandfather.
[00:32:02] Speaker A: Yes, her grandfather.
He is a bit gookie. Yes.
[00:32:08] Speaker B: And they're, they're discussing what Luna has just found out, right?
[00:32:13] Speaker A: Yes. Mm hmm.
[00:32:14] Speaker B: And Ray is like, let's go get out. And let's, let's. We gotta put it. We gotta stop this from happening.
[00:32:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:32:21] Speaker B: And Ami's like, wait a minute. We're, we're not, we're not prepared for that. For that, we have to train and, and study. We have to, you know, we don't.
[00:32:33] Speaker A: Even know the enemy. This is a new person. Yeah.
[00:32:37] Speaker B: And, um, and, uh, this, as opposed to the previous episode where Usagi said, I'm scared and don't want to do it, when it came time for them to decide what the next move was going to be, this time, she pipes up with, hey, I have an idea. Let's train by playing tennis, because there's a really cute tennis, tennis instructor, and we could go train with him.
[00:33:02] Speaker A: Yeah, he's really cute. His name is Masato. He's really great.
[00:33:06] Speaker B: Right.
[00:33:07] Speaker A: And then Luna once again takes the opportunity to be mean to Usagi.
[00:33:12] Speaker B: Well, somebody, somebody says to Usagi, what about tuxedo mask all of a sudden? Yeah. All of a sudden, you got eyes for this tennis inserter. What happened to tuxedo math? And he's like, he's kind of, it's kind of like, yeah, I forgot about that.
[00:33:27] Speaker A: Him, of course.
[00:33:29] Speaker B: And then, and then Luna says, I'm so glad that Mars and Mercury are here, because if it was up to you, all of humanity's energy would have been drained by now. Yeah.
[00:33:42] Speaker A: Which, I mean, she's just, she's just a middle schooler. Come on, junior high.
[00:33:52] Speaker B: You know how I feel about Luna's constant criticism of Usagi. And this is another, it was harsh. It was very hard. And you know what? Somebody else thought so too, because AmI steps in and says, I think you guys are being too hard on her.
[00:34:05] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:34:06] Speaker B: Which was nice to see. Yeah, it was nice to see somebody come to her bathroom.
[00:34:09] Speaker A: Yeah. And Usagi, we definitely appreciated it as well. And it was like, let's go. Let's go train tennis on me. Let's do it. And then I was like, I can't. I have cramps.
[00:34:21] Speaker B: So never mind that. It's a half baked idea that as far as training to fight the Dark Kingdom goes, I don't really see how the two correlate. But SHe won't let it go. SHe's LiKE, after SHe gets made fun of for having two crushes at once, and then she gets shamed, saying that if SHe was the only sailor SCOut, that HUMANitY's energy would have been drained by now. Yeah, I love that she's still like, who wants to go play tennis?
[00:34:51] Speaker A: She's ever the optimist. USAGI.
Oh, the intern. The intern GOT BACK to us. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity. In later times, she was identified with Celine, the personification of the moon.
[00:35:16] Speaker B: Okay.
There was some sort of affinity for the moon. VERY good.
Look at that.
[00:35:24] Speaker A: Ooh.
[00:35:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
So then I believe so. It's not gonna say, let's go play tennis, and, yeah, obviously, you have to go to cram school, right?
[00:35:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:35:41] Speaker B: And then I believe it cuts to they're at Naru's house, that Usagi's at Naru's house, and Naru is serving her tea, and she says, thanks for coming over.
[00:35:50] Speaker A: Yeah. There's a brief scene before that where shows Rui just getting really intense about tennis and just being like, next, next. I need to play someone who's actually good. And Naru's just like, I'm really, really, really worried. So she, of course, calls on Bestie Usagi chan, and she says, big shit.
[00:36:10] Speaker B: Has never acted like this before. And Usagi's like, well, maybe it's just her getting pumped up for the upcoming tournament. And Naruto says, that's what I thought at first, but this seemed. This seems different. And then it cuts to a flashback sequence of them when they're little of Naru and Rui, little and big sisters try looking out for her. And then they're little and they're playing tennis. And then at the end of the flashback sequence, we see it's. It's. It's current times Naru is approaching because we don't see what she says. We see. We see. Rui says, this doesn't concern you. Yeah, go away. Something like that.
[00:36:50] Speaker A: Yeah, leave me alone.
[00:36:52] Speaker B: Or something like that.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: Harry was crushed.
[00:36:55] Speaker B: Right? But that's her. That's. That's her reasoning for saying she's never actually. She's never been mean to me like that before. I mean, she's really genuinely mean, and it's what I was thinking of. It's like the after school special. When someone in middle school starts drinking or doing drugs and their friend comes to them with concern, it's like, man, your business.
[00:37:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:37:17] Speaker B: Her behavior has changed, basically.
[00:37:19] Speaker A: I know what's best for me.
[00:37:21] Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. And so now he was concerned, and she doesn't know what to make of it. But Usagi has the idea for them to go investigate, for them to go dig further. But she says to herself, depending on kind of like, depending on what we find, maybe this. This will be my chance to show the other scouts that I'm, you know, that I'm worth it, I deserve to be part of the team kind of thing.
So it's. She. They're going to investigate on their own. She's not involving Mars or mercury in the investigation. She's gonna go with Naru and check it out.
[00:37:58] Speaker A: She's like, I don't figure this out. I don't need them. They're mean, except for.
[00:38:04] Speaker B: So then they go back to the tennis courts, and she's still being a taskmaster.
And Naru goes up to her and is like, is everything okay with you? You know, why are you being like this? And Rui just kind of blows her off. And then Sailor moon steps up and speaks, for now everyone says, she's just concerned about you.
[00:38:30] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:38:31] Speaker B: And. And. And Rui blows up then. And she tells her, shut up. Go away.
And it's at that moment, all of a sudden, that's her moment of peak energy, evidently, because then we see. Yup. Right. Summons the yolana that is. Is part of the enchantment of the racket. So the yola is. Is part of the spell. So that her, um, then bruised racket all of a sudden by, you know, has a little moment of transformation itself, and it transforms into the yoma, which is a. That of a female. Kind of a female athlete, we'll say.
[00:39:10] Speaker A: And she's. Her name is Tenzi.
[00:39:13] Speaker B: And does that. Does that mean something in Japanese?
[00:39:16] Speaker A: It's just a reconfiguring of the letters for tennis in Japanese, which is, unsurprisingly, tennis.
[00:39:30] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:39:31] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:39:33] Speaker B: Isn't that called an anagram?
[00:39:35] Speaker A: Yes, that's the word I was looking for. Thank you.
[00:39:40] Speaker B: You're welcome.
[00:39:41] Speaker A: Sometimes my brain doesn't do the words.
[00:39:44] Speaker B: So it doesn't mean anything. It doesn't have. It's not. It's not a word in Japanese. It's an anagram for tennis.
[00:39:50] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:39:51] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:39:51] Speaker A: And. And it's a. It's a recurring theme in sailor moon that a lot of the, um, have sort of, like, self referential names or punny names.
[00:40:05] Speaker B: So, um. So then the Yoma, uh, serves. Serves a fireball, basically.
[00:40:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:40:13] Speaker B: Towards. Towards, um, usagi and naru. And knocks them into the bushes.
[00:40:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:40:20] Speaker B: And, um, that lunch.
No.
So then they knocked into the glyphos. But sailing has enough time to move prisoners. There's a power makeup.
[00:40:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:40:34] Speaker B: And she trapped. She transformed, which I just thought she had a lot of time because there's. I mean, you all only had one serve in her. You know what I mean? That was kind of weird. Anyway, I mean, she transforms. We get to see the transformation as we talked about in previous episode. We won't go over that again, talking about her transformation. But I still love it. Still. Great.
And.
And so she dodges. Then it's a. Then it's a. It's a she peppered with fireballs.
[00:41:03] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:41:03] Speaker B: After you transform, she's like, hey, what if one of those hits me? Which I thought was great.
It's like, I think that's kind of the point. I think that's why they come out.
[00:41:15] Speaker A: That's the goal. Usagi.
[00:41:19] Speaker B: She does get hit by one.
[00:41:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:41:22] Speaker B: And she turns into a tennis ball so that she becomes this. There's this giant tennis ball with just his head and her hands and her feet sticking out.
[00:41:31] Speaker A: Yeah, it's. It's very kooshball animal.
[00:41:35] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes, exactly. I'm thinking of Violet from Willy Wonka in the chocolate factory, where she.
[00:41:41] Speaker A: That too.
[00:41:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Just hands and feet in the head and then a big round ball. And so she's. The Yoma is batting her.
I don't know what the term is. Hitting her with the racket and knocking her all over the court. At which point Usagi says to herself, that says out loud, maybe I should have included the other two, obviously meaning mercury and Mars.
[00:42:05] Speaker A: Hindsight's 2020. Yeah.
[00:42:08] Speaker B: So the young was getting the best through at this point.
[00:42:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:42:13] Speaker B: And Nader opens it. Apparently unconscious was naturally. God, just when she went in the bushes, because we aren't really. We're not sure what happened to her.
[00:42:21] Speaker A: It is what it is. I mean, that's the standard bystander trope, you know.
Oh, they're fine. They're just unconscious over there. Right. Exactly.
[00:42:34] Speaker B: All of a sudden.
All of a sudden, the Oma cakes arose to the base. And guess what? Why did that happen, man?
Why did arose suddenly hit the yoma in the face?
[00:42:45] Speaker A: Oh, because it's bay.
[00:42:48] Speaker B: That's right. Tuxedo mask goes up.
[00:42:50] Speaker A: Tuxedo coming.
Be still, my heart.
[00:42:54] Speaker B: And, uh, so the.
He doesn't really say much.
I don't think like Ben. Uh, she teach. I think she. Oh, yeah. So she. She served a ball at him. Yeah, he dodges it. I remember that. He dodges it. And after he dodges, he jumps in the air as part of the dodge. And in midair, his little cane that he carries with him suddenly extends.
Probably he extends to five, six, seven times its normal length.
Knocks the Yoma down.
[00:43:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:43:32] Speaker B: And then he lands, and then he goes. And then when she gets knocked down there, her spell on her saggy is broken. And saggy is no longer at tennis ball. Yes. And Shita mask says, stay on guard. Right? Isn't that what he says?
[00:43:51] Speaker A: I believe so.
[00:43:52] Speaker B: He says. He says, stay on guard.
[00:43:55] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:43:55] Speaker B: And she's like. Then the Yoma gets back on her feet, starts serving fireballs at them again, and grabs. He grabs Usagi and jumps up into the air. So he's holding her in midair, and he says, we're gonna finish this Match together.
Usagi says, oh, I'm so excited, because I need to fight side by side with TuxedO mask. That's right. And then. And then he says, we're gonna finish this Match Together.
And so he lets. Let's go, Busagi. Um, in midair. And then he tosses another rose at the omen's face. Yes, I have this. I may have the order mixed up a little BIt, but something happens when he lands, and he's. He's hurt. It's. It's evident he's hurt.
And, um. And she's like, oh. Usagi's like, oh, no. Are you okay? And he's just like, use your tiara. You know, you gotta do the thing. Do the thing, basically. Right.
[00:45:02] Speaker A: Don't ruin this chance I've gotten you. I've been injured.
[00:45:06] Speaker B: Right? Yeah, don't worry about me. Use your tiara.
[00:45:09] Speaker A: Yeah. Just do the thing.
[00:45:11] Speaker B: So we get moon tiara action, and she spins around like she's getting ready to throw the discus.
[00:45:18] Speaker A: Mm hmm.
[00:45:20] Speaker B: And she throws it, but it topples. This, I'm gonna say is that. Why can't you get that thing to just. Just once, just fly straight and hit its target? I don't know.
You need to. Look, Yara, practice is all.
[00:45:33] Speaker A: Yeah, it's a skill issue.
[00:45:36] Speaker B: There are topples, and it doesn't air burst, and you don't even see it. You hit the yoma it doesn't air burst, and the yome is destroyed.
[00:45:44] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:45:45] Speaker B: Yoma is no more. And then who runs up just in time to miss the plate?
[00:45:49] Speaker A: Mercury in Mars.
Oh, my God.
[00:45:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:45:55] Speaker A: You're here. Hi, guys. Thanks for showing up. Geez, where have you been?
[00:46:00] Speaker B: Doesn't we remark that she's finally proven, you know, she can. She can fight. She's fine.
[00:46:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:07] Speaker B: Showed up for the fight. Yeah.
[00:46:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:11] Speaker B: And, um, let's see, what other notes do I have here? Okay. Okay. So. So back to, um, we missed the moment of the pond that I was going to bring up.
[00:46:21] Speaker A: Oh, yes.
[00:46:23] Speaker B: So when sailor Moore transfer after she transforms prison power makeup, that's when she says to the alma that she can't score an ace.
Monsters. Monsters can't score an ace. Even nabuchaloba would be upset.
And then at one point is, um, is when I believe it's, um, when tuxedo mask says something, the yoma says, serves you right. You know, you like. So, you know, obviously you serve in tennis. Yeah.
So, so that's the thing, is, I was wondering if the word that they use in. Because in a tennis match, in the japanese language, do they call hitting the first hitting of the ball? Is that the same thing as serving someone a beverage? Because that's how the word is used. You know what I mean? That's how it's in English. The serve is used as both serving up the first. The first hitting the ball the first time. So, yeah, I just wondered if that pun was only in the. In the, you know, done in the english translation.
[00:47:34] Speaker A: Well, I know as far as the subtitles are concerned, that's what it said in Japanese.
I've been. I've switched from Japanese, from learning Japanese to learning Spanish, because it serves me slightly better in my current job.
[00:47:50] Speaker B: Right. So I'm in North America. Exactly.
[00:47:55] Speaker A: Yeah. I'm a little rusty on my Japanese, so it doesn't stop me from commenting on anime that Joe is watching and be like, I know what they're saying there. I'm not watching the anime with you, but I know what's going on.
[00:48:08] Speaker B: So then. So the episode ends with, it's later. It's the next day, or maybe several days later, but we see Naru and Usagi. They're back in the tennis courts. And Rui is playing tennis once again. But it's kind of chilled out. She's no longer all worked out.
[00:48:27] Speaker A: She's playing.
[00:48:30] Speaker B: Possessed racket.
[00:48:31] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:32] Speaker B: And Naru says to Sagi, basically, yeah. Rui doesn't remember anything about the last few days. How convenient is that?
And how nice is, like, well, as long as she's doing fine now, none of that really matter. All that stuff doesn't matter. Being dismissive of, you know, the fact that, once again, does Naru know that Usagi is Sailor Moon? Does she? I mean, she hasn't said anything. She hasn't.
I feel like.
[00:49:03] Speaker A: I feel like it's a very, like, buffy the vampire Slayer sort of vibe where, like, it's a known. Like, it's a known secret that freaky shit happens. And this one particular person always shows up to save the day, right? And Naru, I think, is probably, like, probably has some inkling because, one, she's. She's been saved by Usagi. Sailor Moon. How many times now Usagi says things that are related to Sailor Moon, which, you know, as we've discussed with Sailor V. Sailor Moon, there might be reports or, like, videos or whatever of conflicts between her and enemies. Who knows? There weren't smartphones back then, but, you know, news reports, things like that stuff happens.
[00:49:55] Speaker B: One. The thing is that when. When Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon, her face doesn't change, you know? Yeah, it's.
[00:50:05] Speaker A: It's kind of. I feel like that's kind of like Clark Kent logic, right? Also like magic. It's. It's one of. I always. I always look at it as the reason they don't know that sail and moon and Susagi, even though they look the exact fucking same, is because the only reason they look exactly the same is because it's easier for the viewer.
[00:50:27] Speaker B: Right?
Yeah.
[00:50:29] Speaker A: Yeah. So in, um.
In the live action Sailor Moon adaptation, pretty guardian, Sailor Moon, which is amazing and horrible all at the same time.
They. All of the. Obviously, all of the girls. The girl who plays Isagi is not wandering around in a blonde wig the whole time. She's just got. She's got black hair. She looks like a normal, typical japanese schoolgirl. Okay, so when she transforms, that's when they give her the crazy hair and. And all of that stuff. And so she changes more drastically in the live action, which I feel like is closer to what reality would be.
[00:51:12] Speaker B: That hair is pretty impractical to be fighting Yoma.
[00:51:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:15] Speaker B: To be honest with you, I mean, those. I don't know what you call those. They're her little pigtails that flare out and go almost to the ground. Right?
I don't even think she's old enough to have hair that long.
[00:51:28] Speaker A: Well, um, I. I have. I have things to say on that, but I can't say that.
[00:51:34] Speaker B: Okay, you say later?
[00:51:37] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah. They come up later.
[00:51:39] Speaker B: Okay. Okay.
[00:51:40] Speaker A: Her hair comes up later. SO.
[00:51:43] Speaker B: So was like, boy, isn't it weird? Big sis doesn't remember anything about the last few days, and Usagi's like, yeah, that is weird. Well, that stuff matters.
[00:51:54] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:54] Speaker B: All that matters is that she's, you know, is that she's back to her own self and.
And Rui calls out to naru, hey, naru, do you want to play tennis?
[00:52:03] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:04] Speaker B: And of course, now they think this is back here to being her own self.
[00:52:07] Speaker A: Naru accepts because she's not going to get mertilated, right?
[00:52:15] Speaker B: When you join a game with Rui, it WAS Naru serve, and Naru serves it straight into sailor moon chase blind guy.
[00:52:23] Speaker A: Right?
[00:52:24] Speaker B: Yeah. Taylor Moon gets hit in the face and then falls out of frame, and then Naru calls out, get yourself together.
That was so funny because it's like after she searched, she obviously, her servant land where she wanted it to at all. We go wild. Serves straight into Hisagi's face, and then she tells Hisagi to pull herself together.
[00:52:48] Speaker A: It's true. I just love the fact that this show very frequently ends in, like, little goofy gags like that, where it's just, like, lovable.
[00:53:07] Speaker B: That's a. So it was a fail for that bright, because as far as I can tell, he gathered no energy. That energy got dissipated.
[00:53:17] Speaker A: He got. He did worse than Jade. I'm Jade's first go around.
[00:53:22] Speaker B: Exactly. Yeah, exactly. No energy was gathered. And certainly I don't believe that they got any further finding the silver crystal.
[00:53:33] Speaker A: Yeah.
No, they didn't.
No.
[00:53:38] Speaker B: All right, well, that's. That's it.
Next episode, we find Rey has a date.
[00:53:44] Speaker A: Yes. I'm so excited for this one. This is fun.
Ray's first date.
[00:53:52] Speaker B: In the teaser for it, someone is crushing each other. She's like, are you jealous? And Usagi is like. He's like, offended.
[00:54:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
To live my life.
Yes. This is a good one. I'm very excited to talk about it.
[00:54:11] Speaker B: Yeah, it should be fun. As I recall, as every call, it's got some good stuff in it.
[00:54:15] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:54:17] Speaker B: You might talk about social media real quick.
[00:54:19] Speaker A: And, yeah. Good night, as always. You guys can find us everywhere on X or Twitter, because that's what I still call it. X is a stupid name. Facebook as Mooney cast.
